The Swimmer (1968) is one of the few movies that really captures the feeling of coming up with a bit that's only funny to you

but it's cool when you hear how natural it sounds for a jamaican band to cover it

drag queen house music was postpunk. if the exact same music was made by/for a slightly different kind of gay guy we'd have been calling stuff that sounded like this "industrial music" in the 90s

what i really appreciate about pre-code movies is their subtlety

i don't see how he could be the best guitarist right now when Arto Lindsay is still going

not only are AI Seinfeld and MILF Manor joke tv shows from 30 Rock, they're somehow both shows from the same 30 Rock joke

the CIA invented hippies to keep us from finding out about stuff like this

lots of people are talking about the best american rock bands from the 60s but almost none of them did anything as cool as the MC5

you gotta see Med Hondo's West Indies (1979). it's like when Godard started making real movies again with a didactic maoist Jerry Lewis movie in the 70s, except it's a postcolonial Bob Fosse musical set entirely on a slave ship that shifts between the 1700s and the 20th century

you gotta see The Connection (1961), it's Shirley Clarke's "found footage" jazz movie about a group of junkies waiting for the man

the peripheral stuff Sly Stone was recording when he was making There's A Riot Goin' On is some of the coolest sounding music of all time

the first play through of Green Onions went so hard Booker T had to reload it on the rest of the MGs

the ending of La Prisonnière (1968) is like the ending of 2001 A Space Odyssey for people that like french pervert movies

C.C.C.C. and Hijokaidan on some italian tv show in 1997 is like looking into an alternative universe where noise music went mainstream instead of alt-rock, especially once the audience started getting into it

Pet Sounds fans who think "Kokomo is the worst song ever" couldn't comprehend the Beach Boys songs i'm listening to

the car crash scene from The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) is so well shot and lit. even beyond the strobing light (but especially because of the strobing light), its gotta be one of the most expressionistic driving scenes i've ever seen from the rear-projected road era

people don't talk about Armide (1987) as one of Godard's best movies, but i think you have to consider it just in terms of body mass alone

the best part of Paris Blues (1961) is when Louis Armstrong does a run in on Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier's band to challenge them to a jazz battle

Velvert Turner learned how to play guitar from Jimi Hendrix and then he taught Richard Lloyd from Television how to do it too – and that's pretty much what his album sounds like
