ARMY TANKS ON THE STREETS OF IRELAND? Is this the leadership we need in Europe from July ? I have just told MEPs at the European Parliament Agriculture Committee meeting in Brussels of the tactics now being put into action by Micheal Martin and Simon Harris TD to deal with small farmers, lorry owners , contractors , coach operators and small construction companies who are protesting over the price of fuel in Ireland - I reminded the MEPs that this group of people are watching their businesses crumble and had asked for dialogue with the 2 men allegedly running the European Presidency from July onwards - to say there was surprise in the room at the sight of these armoured thanks would be to put it mildly - other MEPS found it incredulous - here is what I told members of the @europeanparliament this morning

For 19 years my oldest son has continuously asked me about the glory era in Irish football - the Italy 1990 celebrations, the amazing win in Giants stadium in 94 and the other amazing results from that era that I was lucky enough to to witness first hand - there were times in recent months when I was even told he would NEVER see the likes of what we did but last night Bryan stole a march on me and came of age at Lansdowne Road! This result brings such immense pride to a new generation of Irish fans who never witnessed a victory of this magnitude on the world stage - I am genuinely so pleased for the young fans of today and delighted that the baton held by great GREAT sportsmen like Ray Houghton and Paul McGrath has now been handed on to Troy Parrott and others . Let us celebrate a truly great occasion - as my boy and his friends did in such style last night ! Come on the Boys In Green!!

Protests and marches up and down the country today and one message back - any package put forward must relieve hardship for ALL corners of society - this is a national crisis and people are hurting badly . These are ordinary decent people who don’t have the dart or the luas or Dublin bus to get them to work - a word of personal thanks to those who came up to me at the protests this morning to express sincere thanks for the work we are doing in Independent Ireland in standing up for the ordinary person

Our GAA clubs in many parts of the west and midlands are struggling to field teams at some grades because of depopulation in their areas. I invited a top level GAA committee to Brussels to meet all MEPs on this issue and they told us their own demographics report shows 26.3% of clubs serve shrinking populations in rural areas, leading to forced amalgamations to survive. In some counties - regrettably - clubs are gone out of existence . I know two grounds with no local club activity anymore so when the European Parliament discussed CAP and the new rural development plan for member states I asked where was the European Commission plan to deal with depopulation? It’s my view that the EU Leader programme companies have a crucial role in keeping these clubs and their parishes alive.

Varadkar comments not just divisive - they’re plain WRONG A few hours after Leo Varadkar dropped the mask of ever being a man capable of understanding the Irish economy , a journalist followed it up with another poorly researched claim on the false economics at the heart of his argument : ‘6 per cent of the work force are in farming - they produce 1 per cent of GDP - these are the facts of the argument - isn’t he right ? ‘ was the gist of the defence . In my opinion both arguments are deeply flawed and economically incorrect . Speaking on the original podcast, Varadkar claimed that what is "in the interests of farmers in the agriculture industry is by and large not in the interests of Ireland as a nation". This is absolutely incorrect. He went on to state that farmers "still see themselves as the people who bring money and jobs into Ireland, where actually a lot of the time they bring costs on Ireland - by any fair analysis he’s wrong again here. Varadkar went on to say also: "People in rural Ireland are very quick to tell people in urban Ireland that ‘we're the real workers, we’re the ones paying all the bills, we’re the ones feeding the country. I think maybe we need to be a little bit more blunt in urban Ireland and say, actually that's not the case, we’re the ones paying all the bills and you’re the ones in receipt of a lot of subsidies and a lot of tax benefits that other people don’t get” he concluded But of course he’s plain WRONG when he says that and I intend to prove it to you in this special podcast and video log : First piece of advice for Leo. Stick to the facts and don’t generalise - There are 133,000 farmers and 70, 000 full time Farmers in this country who list farming as their sole employment The rest are Part time with off farm income mostly in Beef & Sheep - and every cent of their output is recorded . When I researched that output I realised it was the only way to respond properly to the former Taoiseach - not with guff and personal commentary about his background or his politics or that of his party Fine Gael but - the REAL facts about farmer’s output - which does in fact pay the bills ! Here’s the full video response with the stats backed by the Central Statistics Office - let me know what you think ?

This morning I had breakfast with another Italian MEP who has changed his mind on Mercosur after watching the Irish Farmers Journal report on the widespread use of illegal animal antibiotics in Brazil but whie I’m doing the translations and the spade work with my team in Strasbourg and the streets of Brussels are clogged with protesting French farmers - WHERE IS Micheál Martin ??? We need the Irish Government to stand up and be counted TODAY!! call your local FF / FG TD or senator and tell them - because next week may be too late !

The farming and rural community of Offaly, Laois, Meath, westmeath, Kildare and hauliers from as far away as Cork and County Donegal turned out in force at the Midlands hotel in Portlaoise this evening for a major protest meeting to show their concern and downright disgust with the failure of the Irish government to provide meaningful support in terms of the escalation of energy costs and running costs such as green diesel and white diesel. People are hurting badly and after a meeting that went on for over three hours The people present nominated a working committee of over 30 people representing all sectors of society to now proceed with what was described as “armed negotiations” with the government over the course of the short term future. Here is a summary of the meeting

There’s no snow in my home today but there’s considerable annoyance over plans by ESB Group to demolish the 300 million euro power plant building here. Locals want to use the building for alternative industry and I’m calling today on Independent TD Kevin 'Boxer' Moran to support them

There’s been a last minute move to give written approval to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to travel to South America and sign the rotten EU Mercosur trade deal - and the Irish Government must act today at a meeting in Brussels to stop it in its tracks
