LINK & VIDEO: “Nothing good happens after midnight”, yet the only two aldermen governing downtown St. Louis insist it should be a place for late night “entertainment”. While we agree Downtown should welcome more concerts and sporting events, we do not agree that means we should invite more cruising and folks that aren’t coming Downtown for dinner and an event. The late night economy that attracts people drinking in their cars and on sidewalks, instead of inside licensed restaurants, sometimes results in violence. VIDEO: The firsthand accounts from people in our group that were at the Celebrate St. Louis fireworks show at the Arch grounds and walked back through downtown to their apartments do not match the narrative put forth by the SLMPD and the Mayor. It was not, as the Mayor claimed, “a small group of individuals” that caused problems. It was large groups of young people that began gathering in and around Kiener Plaza long before the Celebrate St. Louis fireworks even started. Many in the group were openly carrying backpacks full of illegal fireworks. And the problems started immediately after the fireworks show at the Arch ended. Young people were shooting fireworks into the crowd as they departed the Arch grounds and people were running for cover. As the hour got later, an arsenal of illegal fireworks was deployed around downtown, and people were using fireworks as weapons. Predictably, some of the conflict led to gunfire and shooting victims. The same trouble occurred last year after the July 4 Arch fireworks show. SLMPD admitted that they were unprepared and didn’t anticipate the chaos and lawlessness that developed. They vowed to do better this year. They didn’t. Things were arguably worse. City leadership and SLMPD continue to minimize this continued violence downtown and refuse to be accountable for addressing these problems. The police response, based on multiple firsthand observations, was a complete failure. It was a failure of leadership and planning. And their statement in response did nothing to accept responsibility. We acknowledge that staffing is short and the demands are great, especially on the holiday, but we can’t invite 50,000 guests downtown and then allow their safety to be threatened to the point that they vow never to come back. This is an existential problem for downtown and for the City of St. Louis. Try something different – take responsibility, be accountable, admit mistakes, ask for help. VIDEO: Large groups of unlicensed ATVs and minibikes speeding through our downtown, running red lights, and doing stunts are a danger to motorists and pedestrians, and contribute to a sense of lawlessness that many people have about our neighborhood. VIDEO & PHOTOS: Changing the unfortunate, but widely held negative perception of downtown St. Louis starts with addressing nuisance and often illegal behavior that has become the new normal — reckless driving, routine violation of traffic signals, unlicensed vehicles, illegal parking, trash on streets and sidewalks, abandoned vehicles, graffiti, aggressive panhandling, etc. Downtown can’t thrive if it has a reputation as a place where “anything goes”. #Citizens4STL Mike Kehoe Mayor Cara Spencer St. Louis, MO Police President Megan E. VIDEO: Downtown St. Louis was a study in contrasts this weekend. On the one hand there was the celebration and joy of Pridefest and the thousands of people who watched the parade, enjoyed musical performances, good food and fun. On the other was the late-night disorder and mayhem that continues to plague Downtown. A young woman was shot (apparently an innocent bystander) near CityGarden. There were parties in short-term rental units, and large unruly gatherings of young people blocking streets. Alcohol and guns were prominently displayed in online videos. It will take more than opening rec centers late at night to discourage young people from coming Downtown and engaging in behaviors that are detrimental to them and the neighborhood.
