Why is our government making changes to trusts? Because nurses, teachers, aged care workers and other wage earners are paying too much tax. And those earning income from property investments, shares and other assets need to help a little bit more. These changes will make the tax system fairer. And help get the government into a position where we can pay for services we all rely on, like Medicare and our world-class hospitals, and give further tax cuts to those doing it toughest.

Housing in Australia is really tough. A year ago today, we opened up the 5% deposit program to all first home buyers. Since then, more than 100,000 people have used it to get the keys to their first home. There is so much more work to do to make housing more affordable for Australians. But we are making real progress on a problem that has been decades in the making.

There’s a lot that Andrew Hastie and I disagree on. But calling a decorated veteran, who repeatedly risked his life for his country, a coward? That’s just not on. Veterans don’t make the decisions about whether our country goes to war. They put on a uniform and put themselves in harm’s way, and they do it for us. They deserve our respect, and our enduring gratitude. Pauline Hanson has disgraced herself, and she should apologise.

I never thought I’d see the day where One Nation - a political party that punches down, that stokes division, that mocks the religious beliefs of other Australians, that actively wants to unravel multicultural Australia - would be talking about being part of a government. Liberals and Nationals - get it together.
