36L/18R ➜ 1L/19R Last night, the first phase of CLT’s runway renumbering was completed as Runway 36L/18R officially became 1L/19R. It's a big task as runway numbers can measure 60 feet tall by 20 feet wide. In addition to pavement markings, signs need to be changed on the taxiways, connectors and runway. Why the change? With CLT’s new 10,000-foot Fourth Parallel Runway (1C/19C) set to open in 2027, the Airport is preparing now for system-wide consistency, safety and FAA compliance.

Last night, CLT completed its final runway redesignation returning our oldest and original runway to a familiar designation: Runway 18-36. When the runway opened in 1936, it was designated 18-36. In 1980 as CLT’s airfield grew, the runway became 18L-36R, a designation it carried for the next 46 years. Now, as we prepare for the opening of our Fourth Parallel Runway, it seems fitting that the runway where it all started has returned to where it started: 18-36.

Construction on CLT’s Fourth Parallel Runway has now surpassed 1.15 million man-hours, with crews completing more than 5.8 million cubic yards of earthwork to date! Paving and electrical work continues, along with the installation of drainage infrastructure across the site. It’s all leading up to fall 2027, when the 10,000-foot runway is scheduled to be commissioned.

CLT’s fourth parallel runway is taking shape. The 10,000-foot by 150-foot runway is steadily moving toward a planned opening in fall 2027, with work actively underway across the airfield. Crews are placing concrete, installing drainage systems and building out erosion control, while airfield electrical infrastructure comes online in multiple areas. This project goes beyond the runway itself. It includes a new Charlotte Fire Station and the renumbering of existing runways, all part of preparing CLT for continued growth.

Winter Storm Gianna is impacting the Charlotte region. CLT remains open and operational, with Airport teams actively responding to conditions. Travelers should know: ✈️ Check directly with your airline for the latest flight information before heading to the Airport. ❄️ A 300-member snow team is continuously clearing runways, taxiways, roadways, sidewalks and pedestrian areas as conditions change. 🛂 TSA Checkpoints 1 and 3 are closed for the remainder of the day. Checkpoint 2 remains open. 🚌 Airport shuttle buses are operating on a reduced schedule and at slower speeds for safety. 🚫 The CLT Airport Overlook is closed. Passengers are encouraged to remain patient, stay informed and prioritize safety throughout their journey.

Chief Infrastructure Officer, Jack Christine, welcomed some of the first “sky walkers” on the new skybridges today at #CLTairport. Now, we all have the high ground. Along with the skybridges opening, the departures level roadway will no longer close nightly.

Starting July 31, two pedestrian skybridges connecting the Hourly Deck and Terminal opens, marking a major milestone in #CLTairport's Terminal Lobby Expansion project. Located on the 5th floor of the Hourly Deck and linking to the 3rd level in the terminal, the skybridges provide a weather-protected, efficient access away from traffic. With the opening of the skybridges, roadway crossings between the terminal and Hourly Deck/Rental Car Facility are prohibited. Pedestrians must use the skybridges or underground walkways. Signage and staff in yellow vests will assist with directions. Learn more:

Concourse A Phase II is now open at #CLTairport! This 200,000 sq. ft. expansion introduces 10 new gates; seven for Delta, two for Frontier Airlines and one common-use gate, bringing CLT’s total gate count to 124. Travelers can enjoy fresh dining options like Dunkin'', Crown Diner and Great Wagon Road Distilling Co. Explore unique artworks such as Val Britton’s “Where Earth Meets Sky”, a Wright Brother exhibit and a life-sized DC-9-82 T-Tail by MotoArt. Phase II also features auto-tinting windows, integrated charging stations and a private Mother’s Room.

#CLTairport’s newest airline and international route is … Etihad Airways to Zayed International Airport مطار زايد الدولي on a 787-9 Dreamliner! With this milestone, Etihad becomes the first airline from the region to fly directly to Charlotte. Flights will begin May 4, 2026, with 4x weekly service. Tickets are now open for sale on
