Liberty is a fundamental right. Article 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights guarantees everyone the right to liberty and security. Any deprivation of liberty must be lawful and strictly limited to specific circumstances set out by law.

Courts must be independent and impartial. Everyone charged with a criminal offence is presumed innocent until proved guilty, and is entitled to be defended by a lawyer, whose fees must be paid by the state if they cannot afford them. #ECHRImpact

Everyone has the right to take part in peaceful meetings and set up associations, including trade unions, and/or to join them. States must ensure that citizens are free to take part in peaceful demonstrations. #HumanRights #ECHRImpact

Human rights are not a privilege, they are a guarantee. The European Convention on Human Rights makes this a reality for millions across Europe. On Human Rights Day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to these principles.
