On this day in 2023, category 5 Hurricane Otis made landfall near Acapulco. It was the strongest landfalling Pacific hurricane on record, surpassing Patricia in 2015. It was also the costliest hurricane to make landfall in Mexico, with damage totaling $12-16 billion. It was originally forecasted to remain a weak tropical storm, but explosively intensified unexpectedly. In just 24 hours, winds increased by a whopping 115mph, the 2nd fastest in the basin. Only behind Patricia in 2015.
