It was also the costliest hurricane to make landfall in Mexico, with damage totaling $12-16 billion. It was originally forecasted to remain a weak tropical storm, but explosively intensified unexpectedly. In just 24 hours, winds increased by a whopping 115mph, the 2nd fastest in the basin. Only behind Patricia in 2015.
