French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron arrived at the Vatican today, where Macron held a private meeting with Pope Leo XIV and exchanged gifts with the pontiff. Their talks focused mainly on the war in the Middle East, focusing on Lebanon. This was the French president’s first meeting with Pope Leo XIV. Macron’s last papal meeting was with Pope Francis in Ajaccio, France, in 2024.

I just experienced a beautiful moment here in Beirut, Lebanon. I was sitting in a coffee shop in the city, watching live coverage of the Pope’s arrival on my laptop. Across the room, I noticed two young men huddled over a phone. Curious, I walked over and realised they were also watching the live images of Pope Leo XIV landing in their country. To my surprise, they told me they were both Muslims, and then warmly invited me to sit with them so we could watch it together. When I asked what they hoped the Pope’s visit would bring to Lebanon, they answered simply, "peace". 🇱🇧 🇻🇦

In the lounge at Beirut Airport waiting for my flight back to Rome, the national Lebanese channel LBCI Lebanon News was on. They were doing a sports segment when I noticed the host and guests were all wearing pins with the Vatican and Lebanese flags - four days after the Pope had left! It really shows how proud they are of the visit. Bravo, Lebanon!
