Belgium’s publicly funded youth radio station, Studio Brussel (VRT), featured a sketch in which its breakfast presenters smashed various items on air, including a statue of Our Lady and Jesus. I asked if they were concerned it would cause offence, and if they would do the same to a symbol of Islam or Judaism.

I just experienced a beautiful moment here in Beirut, Lebanon. I was sitting in a coffee shop in the city, watching live coverage of the Pope’s arrival on my laptop. Across the room, I noticed two young men huddled over a phone. Curious, I walked over and realised they were also watching the live images of Pope Leo XIV landing in their country. To my surprise, they told me they were both Muslims, and then warmly invited me to sit with them so we could watch it together. When I asked what they hoped the Pope’s visit would bring to Lebanon, they answered simply, "peace". 🇱🇧 🇻🇦

This morning, shortly before 5am local time, a man entered a shrine in Medjugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and set it on fire. Outside he wrote 'Devil in a skirt' on a statue of Our Lady. Medjugorje is one of the world’s best-known Roman Catholic pilgrimage sites.

French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron arrived at the Vatican today, where Macron held a private meeting with Pope Leo XIV and exchanged gifts with the pontiff. Their talks focused mainly on the war in the Middle East, focusing on Lebanon. This was the French president’s first meeting with Pope Leo XIV. Macron’s last papal meeting was with Pope Francis in Ajaccio, France, in 2024.

VATICAN: Pope Francis welcomes Celtic Football Club from Glasgow at the Vatican today, and spoke about the 'valued legacy' of Celtic and how it was originally established to help fight poverty. "I pray that you will continue to remember and bear witness to everything that makes sport genuinely good and noble. May Almighty God bless each of you and your families. I wish you a safe journey home to Scotland." #CelticFC

In the lounge at Beirut Airport waiting for my flight back to Rome, the national Lebanese channel LBCI Lebanon News was on. They were doing a sports segment when I noticed the host and guests were all wearing pins with the Vatican and Lebanese flags - four days after the Pope had left! It really shows how proud they are of the visit. Bravo, Lebanon!

The beautiful sound of the Notre Dame ‘Worker’s Choir’ rehearsing. More than 80 engineers, architects, carpenters, crane operators, construction workers… who all worked on the Cathedral’s restoration have formed a choir that will perform inside Notre Dame next week.

As the final day of mourning of Pope Francis came to an end, and we are on the verge of a conclave to elect a new Pope, a huge lightning storm lit up the skies above the Vatican in Rome last night. This was around 3:30am local time and just listen to that crash of thunder at the end!

Here's a beautiful story of an Irish postman called Mike Sheehan, who cycled up to 30 miles a day for 42 years delivering post around Goleen in West Cork. While other postmen opted for cars and motorbikes because of the steep mountainous terrain, Mike never changed. His son Vincent at the end is lovely. 🇮🇪 A report of mine from 2019!

Before he was Pope Leo XIV, Robert Prevost had heard about 16-year-old Donal Walsh who was dying of cancer in the west of Ireland. He was so impressed by Donal's deep that he wrote him a letter offering to make him an honorary Augustinian. And two days before he died, Donal was sworn in. This is the story of a teenager whose courage and conviction inspired Ireland, and also a future Pope.
