Cook County Sheriff’s Police conducted our first of many enhanced expressway patrols targeting drivers using the shoulder to bypass slower traffic. In just a few hours, we pulled over and ticketed more than 100 vehicles, 49 of which were captured on video riding the shoulder by our new police helicopter. Using the shoulder to pass slower traffic is dangerous and can lead to catastrophic accidents. Violations carry up to a $1000 fine. Please be aware if you’re driving on the shoulder, we will pull you over!

Last month, Cook County Sheriff’s Police Sgt. Kevin Johnson was driving on southbound Interstate 90 near 16th Street when he noticed an overturned vehicle and stopped to help. When he approached the scene, Sgt. Johnson saw a man lying on the ground who was not breathing and had no pulse. Without hesitation, he began performing CPR. After a second round of chest compressions, the man began breathing again and regained a pulse. Sgt. Johnson remained by the man’s side until paramedics and Illinois State Police arrived. We are grateful Sgt. Johnson was in the right place at the right time. His quick thinking and lifesaving actions exemplify what it truly means to protect and serve. #CookCountySheriff #PublicSafety #LawEnforcement #ServeAndProtect #CCSPD

In our most recent enhanced traffic enforcement mission on I-55, Cook County Sheriff's Police issued 59 citations as we continue to focus on curbing motorists illegally passing on the shoulder. Just before our mission, a Cook County Judge sentenced dozens of shoulder driving defendants to a fine of $250, 4 months of supervision, and 3 days of community service in the Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program. Just a friendly reminder, if you ride the shoulder, we will pull you over!
