The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) held a strong protest at the Police Commissioner’s Office in Noida on September 3 against the horrific gang rape of a 16-year-old girl and the continuing failure of the police and administration to ensure women’s safety in Greater Noida. On August 3, the 16-year-old girl was gang-raped on a bus by the driver and conductor after being picked up from Pari Chowk, Greater Noida, and was abandoned near Kashmere Gate in Delhi. In another horrific incident, a six-year-old girl was subjected to sexual violence in Jalpura village, Greater Noida, on August 28 and subsequently died. Addressing the protest, senior CPI(M) leader and AIDWA Patron Brinda Karat said that these were not merely tragedies affecting two families, but reflected the collective failure of the Uttar Pradesh Police, Delhi Police and Union Home Ministry. She also condemned the violation of safety standards laid down after the Nirbhaya case, stressing that even public transport is no longer safe for women and girls. AIDWA Gautam Buddh Nagar District President Rekha Chauhan was placed under house arrest by Noida Police from 11 pm on September 2 in an attempt to prevent her from participating in the protest. AIDWA strongly condemned this undemocratic and repressive action. AIDWA submitted a memorandum demanding time-bound and impartial investigation, the strictest legal action against all perpetrators, action against police personnel responsible for negligence, and concrete measures to ensure safety in public transport and public spaces. AIDWA warned that the movement will be intensified if the authorities fail to take concrete steps to ensure the safety of women and girls.

If the demands are not met, a gherao of the District Magistrate’s office will be launched, and the agitation demanding justice for Mohammad Mafik will be intensified.
