It was #OTD in 1987 that Eric Show hit Andre Dawson in the face in the third inning after homering against Show in the first inning. Rick Sutcliffe and the #Cubs bench came running after Show. Once Andre Dawson regained consciousness, he went after Show, who had to leave the game for his own safety. Dawson, suffered cuts on his left-upper lip and a bruise on his left-lower cheekbone and he received 24 stitches inside and outside the mouth. Greg Maddux retaliated by beaning Benito Santiago and got ejected.

It was #OTD in 2014 that Addison Russell was traded to the Chicago Cubs in a blockbuster deal with the Oakland Athletics. The Cubs sent pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland in exchange for Russell, outfielder Billy McKinney, and pitcher Dan Straily. Samardzija was the ace of the Cubs staff, but Addison Russell would become a vital part of the Cubs championship run. It was #OTD in 2003 that Reds pitcher Paul Wilson made the mistake of charging the mound against Kyle Farnsworth. Wilson charged the mound following an inside pitch while attempting a sac bunt. Wilson began jawing at Kyle Farnsworth before suddenly charging the pitcher's mound. Farnsworth quickly dropped his glove and executed the perfect takedown tackle, landing several punches and leaving Wilson a bloody mess!

It was #OTD in 2002 that #Cubs Hall of Famer put on a show during the Home Run Derby in Milwaukee. Estimates from that day had Sosa bashing seven 500-plus foot blasts, including a jaw dropping 524-footer that stands as the longest Derby dinger ever measured -- Statcast Era or prior. Sammy didn’t win the derby, Jason Giambi did, but Sosa stole the show!

It was #OTD in 2001 that one of the craziest #Cubs game occurred. Down 2-1 in the 6th inning, Ron Coomer was called out by home plate umpire Angel Hernandez trying to score on a wild pitch. During the 7th inning stretch, Steve McMichael would “have some speaks” with Hernandez and became the first stretch singer to be ejected. With the game tied in the 9th, Ricky Gutierrez scored on one of the wildest walkoffs you’ve ever seen

It was #OTD in 2007 that Lou Pinella was ejected from a game for the first time as #Cubs manager. It was Lou’s first year managing the team and the Cubs started the season with a disappointing 22-30 record. The Cubs were trailing 4-3 after blowing a three-run lead and it looked like they would lose their sixth straight game. With no outs, Angel Pagan, the tying run, was at second base. Braves pitcher Rafael Soriano threw a ball in the dirt, Pagan ran to third, but catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia picked the ball on a hop and gunned it to third and Pagan was called out. Piniella then stormed out of the dugout to argue the call to argue with third base umpire Mark Wegner. Lou kicked dirt on Wegner’s shoes, screamed in his face, and kicked his hat multiple times as he was ejected. The Cubs lost the game 5-3 and Lou was suspended for four games.

It was #OTD in 1984 that the Cubs acquired Rick Sutcliffe , George Frazier and Ron Hassey from the Indians for Joe Carter, Mel Hall, Don Schultze and Darryl Banks. Sutcliffe went 16-1 with a 2.69 ERA to help lead the Cubs to the Eastern Division title and would win the 1984 NL Cy Young Award!

It was #OTD in 2016 that the #Cubs beat the Dodgers 8-4 in one of the greatest games I’ve ever attended. The defense was phenomenal, Javy Baéz stole home, and the Cubs were leading 3-1 in the 8th. The Dodgers scored two to tie in the 8th, but the Cubs loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, and pinch hitter Miguel Montero hit a grand slam that caused Wrigley Field to shake! Dexter Fowler hit a forgotten solo home run right after that and the Cubs won this one 8-4

ESPN Sports Center made a tremendous video of the #Cubs Ring Ceremony, which was held 8 years ago today. This is the rare extended version. I still talk to 10 out of the the other 20 ring bearers. We are bonded for life. Love that they played Eddie Vedder song at the end of this. Watch the whole video and you will have tears in your eyes

It was #OTD in 2003 that a shouting match erupted in the dugouts between Dusty Baker and Tony LaRussa. The #Cubs and Cardinals were in the middle of a 5 game series at Wrigley Field. The Cardinals came into the series in 1st place, the Astros in 2nd a game behind, and the Cubs in 3rd, 2 1/2 games back. In the 4th game with the Cubs down 2-0, Cardinal pitcher dan haren hit Cubs starter Matt Clement. Benches were warned and that’s when both managers began shouting at each other. The Cubs were down 6-0 in the 6th, but thu would comeback and win this one 8-7! The Cubs would take 4 out of 5 games, jump into 2nd place, and the Cardinals would finish out of the playoff picture. It was #OTD in 2016 the #Cubs clinched the National League Central Division title after the St. Louis Cardinals lost to the San Francisco Giants, despite the Cubs losing their own game to the Milwaukee Brewers earlier that day. This marked their first division title since 2008. The Cubs celebrated the next day, September 16th, with a 5-4 walkoff win even though nearly all the regulars had the day off!

It was #OTD that the #Cubs beat the Dodgers in the 2016 NLCS 5-0 to win the NL pennant for the first time since 1945. Kyle Hendricks pitched 7 1/3 innings and gave up 2 hits. Aroldis Chapman pitched an inning and a third. 2 of the Dodgers bases runners were wiped out with double plays, 1 was picked off, Hendricks and Chapman faces the minimum, 27 batters. Anthony Rizzo and Willson Contreras homered, Kris Bryant and Dexter Fowler had RBI singles. Greatest game in Wrigley Field History

It was #OTD in 1976 that Rick Monday, playing center field for the #Cubs, saved the American flag from being burned on the field by two protesters at Dodgers Stadium. Rick Monday, who served six years in the Marine Corps Reserves, realized what was happening, he rushed the arsonists, and snatched the flag away from them. When Monday came to bat an inning later, the Dodger Stadium scoreboard flashed the message: “Rick Monday…You made a great play.”
