Mike Ditka was scheduled to sing the seventh inning stretch on July 5th, 1998. This was the year that Harry Caray died and the “guest conductor” was new at Wrigley Field. Ditka got stuck in traffic and was running late. By the time the top of the seventh ended, Ditka was still not there and Steve Stone and Chip Caray stalled for time. Finally Ditka busts into the press box, grabs the mic, and screams Take Me Out To The Ball Game in twenty two seconds! Organist Gary Pressy could barely keep up! The crowd roared with approval! It was #OTD in 1998 that the #Cubs, fighting for the wildcard spot, blew a 7-0 lead and were walked off by the Brewers. With two outs and the bases loaded leading 7-5, Rod Beck got Geoff Jenkins to fly out to left, which should have ended the game, but Brant Brown dropped the ball, three runs scored; and the Brewers won 8-7. This was also remembered for Ron Santo’s legendary reaction!

It was #OTD in 2019 that WGN broadcast their final #Cubs game, the season finale against the Cardinals in St Louis. The Cubs were broadcast on WGN for 72 years, bringing Northside baseball across the US and making generations of Cubs fans. It was the end of an era.

It was #OTD in 1997 that Ryne Sandberg played his final game at Wrigley Field. Sandberg was 2-3 with a double and an RBI, and was pulled after a single in the 5th, giving the Wrigley faithful one more chance to say thank you. Ryno came out for one last curtain call!

It was #OTD in 1987 that Eric Show hit Andre Dawson in the face in the third inning after homering against Show in the first inning. Rick Sutcliffe and the #Cubs bench came running after Show. Once Andre Dawson regained consciousness, he went after Show, who had to leave the game for his own safety. Dawson, suffered cuts on his left-upper lip and a bruise on his left-lower cheekbone and he received 24 stitches inside and outside the mouth. Greg Maddux retaliated by beaning Benito Santiago and got ejected.

It was #OTD in 2001 that one of the craziest #Cubs game occurred. Down 2-1 in the 6th inning, Ron Coomer was called out by home plate umpire Angel Hernandez trying to score on a wild pitch. During the 7th inning stretch, Steve McMichael would “have some speaks” with Hernandez and became the first stretch singer to be ejected. With the game tied in the 9th, Ricky Gutierrez scored on one of the wildest walkoffs you’ve ever seen

Under Maddon, the Cubs averaged 92 wins per season, was the only manager to make the playoffs in 4 consecutive seasons, went to 3 straight NLCS, and led the team to the 2016 World Series. It was #OTD in 1998 that the #Cubs beat the Giants 5-3 in a one game playoff at Wrigley Field. Steve Trachsel pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings, Gary Gaetti hit a two-run home run, Matt Mieske hit a 2 run RBI single to make it 4-0, and Sammy Sosa scored on a wild pitch. The Giants mounted a comeback in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs, but Rod Beck came in and got Joe Carter to pop out to end the game!

It was #OTD in 2003 that Reds pitcher Paul Wilson made the mistake of charging the mound against Kyle Farnsworth. Wilson charged the mound following an inside pitch while attempting a sac bunt. Wilson began jawing at Kyle Farnsworth before suddenly charging the pitcher's mound. Farnsworth quickly dropped his glove and executed the perfect takedown tackle, landing several punches and leaving Wilson a bloody mess!

It was #OTD in 2007 that Lou Pinella was ejected from a game for the first time as #Cubs manager. It was Lou’s first year managing the team and the Cubs started the season with a disappointing 22-30 record. The Cubs were trailing 4-3 after blowing a three-run lead and it looked like they would lose their sixth straight game. With no outs, Angel Pagan, the tying run, was at second base. Braves pitcher Rafael Soriano threw a ball in the dirt, Pagan ran to third, but catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia picked the ball on a hop and gunned it to third and Pagan was called out. Piniella then stormed out of the dugout to argue the call to argue with third base umpire Mark Wegner. Lou kicked dirt on Wegner’s shoes, screamed in his face, and kicked his hat multiple times as he was ejected. The Cubs lost the game 5-3 and Lou was suspended for four games.

It was #OTD in 2016 that David Ross played his final regular season game at Wrigley Field, a 3-1 #Cubs victory over the Cardinals. Grandpa Rossy got a standing ovation in all of his at bats. He went 1-2 with a solo home run and was intentionally walked. In the bottom of the 7th, Joe Maddon went to the mound and made a change at catcher, giving Ross one final standing ovation!
