But here’s the truth: none of that stops me from showing up. Training with disabilities isn’t easy. It hurts. It’s frustrating. It’s slower. But it’s possible. Do I have a wound on my nub that hurts like hell? Absolutely. But crossing the finish line of the Tunnel to Towers 5K made every ounce of pain worth it. There were moments I thought I couldn’t keep going—the heat, the pain, the exhaustion nearly broke me. But my brother Rick and the West Point Cadets were right there, and we live by one rule: leave no man behind. Then I saw the faces and names of the fallen. That lit a fire in me. I felt their spirits. I felt those we lost on 9/11/01. And I knew I couldn’t let them down. And to my wife thank you. For pushing me, for being my anchor, for reminding me why this means so much to us. None of this happens without you. Now it’s time to heal. Next year, I won’t just walk it. I’ll run it. That’s a promise.
