🚨 COINBASE JUST LAUNCHED CRYPTO LOANS IN THE UK 🇬🇧 🚨 You can now borrow up to $5 million in USDC against your Bitcoin or Ethereum. Without selling a single sat 👀 🤔 So is it taxable? And the honest answer right now is… it depends. HMRC’s rules hinge on beneficial ownership. If you pledge your BTC as collateral but still own it economically, the argument is there is no disposal and no CGT. But HMRC have never confirmed this for products like Coinbase’s. That ambiguity is exactly why I am in active conversations with HMRC around their DeFi discussion document 🔍 Their own consultation proposed that locking tokens as collateral should NOT trigger a taxable event as long as you retain economic ownership. Not law yet. But if it lands the way it is written, this could be genuinely tax free for UK users 🙌 This is massive for anyone who wants liquidity without a tax bill. 🚨 HMRC just dropped a Call for Evidence on stablecoin taxation TODAY And it could change everything for UK crypto holders 👇 Right now, spending a stablecoin is a CGT event Every transaction. Tracked. Recorded. Calculated. Buy a coffee with USDC? You’re doing a tax computation ☕📊 Pay with your debit card? Nothing. Zero admin. Move on. That is not a level playing field. That is a punishment for using crypto. HMRC have finally acknowledged it 👀 They are now exploring whether stablecoins should be treated like fiat currency for tax purposes Exempt asset status.
