On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at about 4:15 pm, the Dallas Police Department received a call from in the 3900 block of Northbound Julius Schepps Freeway reporting a male subject walking into traffic. A pilot from the Drone First Responder program utilized an Unmanned Aerial System to respond to the call. The pilot was able to locate the man walking on the freeway, maintain a view of the suspect, and direct uniformed elements to his location. Uniformed elements quickly located the man and successfully/safely removed him from the freeway before any harm came to him. This is just the first of many positive results the Drone First Responder program is yielding. Stay tuned for many more!! 👮🏽♀️🤝🏾🛰

Today, the Dallas Police Department announced the arrests of two suspects connected to a New Year’s Eve gunfire incident on the I-30 bridge that was captured in a widely circulated video and viewed worldwide. Anthony Acevedo, 20, and Jose AlarconSanchez, 18, both of Grand Prairie, were seen in multiple social media videos firing weapons from the Margaret McDermott Bridge just west of Downtown Dallas. Detectives with the Central Patrol Division and the Special Investigations Unit launched an aggressive and exhaustive investigation, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Investigators recovered more than 100 shell casings near the scene. During the investigation, detectives learned that AlarconSanchez had been arrested by the Grand Prairie Police Department for a similar offense in their city during the early morning hours of January 1, 2026. As the investigation continued, detectives uncovered evidence linking 25-year-old Anderson Derce Lara to a separate road-rage shooting in November. In that incident, Derce Lara fired multiple rounds into a vehicle occupied by three adults and three children. With assistance from the ATF, investigators executed a search warrant and recovered multiple firearms, including the rifles seen in the social media video. Acevedo and AlarconSanchez are charged with Discharge of a Firearm in Certain Municipalities, a Class A misdemeanor. Derce Lara is charged with six counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a first-degree felony. Acevedo has since been released on bond. Both AlarconSanchez and Derce Lara have immigration holds. “If you put lives at risk in Dallas, we will identify you, investigate thoroughly, and hold you accountable,” said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. #DallasNews

On March 17, 2026, at approximately 11:38 p.m., Dallas Police responded to a call for service on the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge regarding a woman who appeared to be in distress. When officers arrived, they found the woman sitting on the side of the bridge, about to jump into the river below. The officers began speaking to the woman, and called for a RIGHT Care team, as well as a swift water rescue team from Dallas Fire-Rescue. The first responders continued talking with the woman for over an hour, keeping physical contact with her until she finally chose to stand up and step back over onto the bridge. The officers immediately embraced her and took her to a local hospital for medical evaluation. The immediate response by these officers, and the compassion and patience they showed, saved this young woman’s life. This investigation is documented under case number 037481-2026.

Dallas PD’s Drone as First Responder program continues to support our on-the-ground patrol officers by providing aerial coverage on emergency calls while officers respond. On a recent call for service in the 2000 block of Elm Street, our drone unit was overhead at an 11-story parking garage where a man called 9-1-1 and told the call analyst he wanted to jump off the building. The drone maintained visual contact with the man, relaying important details to the officers arriving, as the man looked distressed and repeatedly walked to the edge, even sitting on the ledge and looking down. When the officers reached the top of the garage, they quickly and safely took the man into custody. With the fast response by the drone pilot, officers arrived at the scene with critical intelligence they would not have received from just the call to 9-1-1. On March 16, 2026, at approximately 11:15 a.m., Dallas Police officers assigned to the Project Safe Neighborhood Task Force located a vehicle that was reported stolen in an armed carjacking on March 15. The officers called for additional units and AIR-1 to maintain visual contact with the vehicle before attempting a traffic stop in the 12300 block of Greenville Avenue. As officers approached and ordered the driver to exit the vehicle, the car took off, and the officers immediately began to pursue it. With AIR-1 overhead, the suspect drove the wrong way down Greenville Avenue, and officers chased the driver onto I-635 with the suspect’s speed approaching 120 miles per hour. The suspect exited the freeway at Jupiter Road and continued to speed through residential areas. Because the helicopter was tracking the suspect, officers were able to safely navigate the residential areas and surface streets, following the suspect back onto I-635. The suspect sped through a construction zone, again reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour until he exited on Town East Boulevard and headed into the City of Mesquite, driving into oncoming traffic into the 2000 block of Town East Boulevard. With traffic building ahead, the suspect attempted to drive over the median and his vehicle became disabled. Dallas Police officers, assisted by officers from Mesquite and deputies from the Dallas Sheriff’s Office, took the suspect into custody. He was identified as 46-year-old Alfredo Hernandez and charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, a state jail felony; Evading Arrest or Detention with a Vehicle, a third-degree felony; Manufacture / Delivery of a Controlled Substance, a second-degree felony; and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Felon, a third-degree felony. The Dallas Police Department’s new Drone as First Responder program officially launched today with eight remotely piloted drones based at Dallas Fire-Rescue stations across the City of Dallas. These drones are operated out of the Fusion/Real Time Crime Center and are designed to respond to calls for service in a two-mile radius from their base station. The base locations were selected based on heat maps of calls for service for both police and fire, placing them where they can potentially respond to the greatest number of calls. The pilots will be able to get to the scene quicker than in a squad car and begin to provide real-time intelligence and feedback to officers, as well as reduce the level of response or clear a call entirely if the incident has resolved. If a pilot sees a call in a drone’s response area where aerial intelligence can enhance officer safety, they can deploy a drone to provide critical updates to officers at the scene. Each drone is equipped with a thermal camera to help during nighttime operations, as well as a loudspeaker to make announcements to individuals on the ground. “I challenged our team to find innovative ways to continue improving our response times, and this new drone unit will not only keep officers free to respond to more calls, but provide real time updates as they are responding to calls,” said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. “Even during our training, our pilots were able to clear three holding calls in an hour with one drone. That alone proved their value to us, and I’m looking forward to seeing the benefits in both officer safety and response times.” Our public safety partners at Dallas Fire-Rescue will also be utilizing the Drone as First Responder program, with training for pilots underway. Under the new program, in the event of a reported structure fire, a drone will be dispatched to the scene ahead of arriving apparatus. This real-time aerial perspective will allow incident command to assess the size, scope, and intensity of a fire before firefighters even step off the apparatus. “Dallas Fire-Rescue is proud to collaborate with DPD on any initiative that will make our city safer,” said Justin Ball, Chief of Dallas Fire-Rescue. “By strategically docking the drones at our fire stations in high-demand areas, we are optimizing our response times and ensuring our tactics are more precise, while adding an extra layer of protection for the city.” This collaborative partnership between police and fire departments represents a major step forward in using smart-city technology to protect both residents and first responders.

On December 24, 2025, at about 4:40 a.m., Dallas Police responded to a call for service in the 100 block of E Camp Wisdom Road. The preliminary investigation determined that a female was attempting to jump off a bridge near the location. Upon arrival, Senior Corporal Timothy Griffin, #11958 and Police Officer Carlos Gomez, #12963 observed the female seated extremely closed to the edge of the bridge. Officers recognized the immediate danger and quickly approached the female to secure her. Officers were able to grab and hold the female by one of her arms as she went over the edge and was hanging above the S.R.L. Thornton Freeway. Officers immediately requested additional cover units as they maintained physical control of the female. Sergeant Randall Mays, #10285 arrived on scene and assisted Senior Corporal Griffin and Police Officer Gomez to safely pull back the female over the railing. Dallas Fire-Rescue responded and transported the female to a local hospital for treatment. Senior Corporal Griffin and Officer Gomez placed themselves in imminent danger without hesitation to ensure the safety of the female. Without their decisive and selfless actions, the female would have likely sustained serious injury or death. The swift, decisive, and selfless actions of these officers exemplify the Dallas Police Department’s commitment to protecting life and serving our community, especially in moments when compassion and courage matter most.

Retired Dallas Police sergeant Donald Crum, a 26-year veteran of the Helicopter Unit, was the victim of a burglary and lost much of his Dallas PD memorabilia. The suspect was caught in South Texas by U.S. Marshals Service, and our team was able to bring Sgt. Crum’s belongings back to him. We sat down for a conversation about his time on the Department and what it meant to be reunited with his cherished Dallas PD awards and insignias. #WeAreDallasPD
