The first rain of the season is here—and San Francisco Public Works is working hard to keep our drains clear and our streets safe. You can do your part too by joining SF Water Power Sewer’s Adopt-a-Drain program. It’s a rewarding way to help the environment and prevent flooding. Stay safe and dry, San Francisco!

Thanks to the great work at SFPD, we are driving down crime, catching criminals, and sending a message to the region and the world that SF is a safe American city. This week, San Francisco Police arrested two robbery suspects and recovered stolen property after tracking a vehicle linked to a series of car break-ins.

Downtown First Thursday, a free monthly block party, packed the streets tonight. It’s just another way we are bringing people downtown to enjoy the heart of our city.

Starting tomorrow, we’re launching the new PermitSF portal. This is a one-stop shop to apply for permits online without going to the Permit Center to wait in line and file paperwork in person. To kick things off, 5 permit types will be available through the portal. Those include permits for replacing doors, windows, siding, fire alarms and sprinklers, or permits needed to organize block parties. This portal is just our latest step in making the lives of San Franciscans easier, saving residents and businesses both time and money. Learn more here:

San Francisco’s economy is recovering, and people want to be here again. As we continue to build that momentum, we need to make sure that San Franciscans feel the benefits and can continue to raise their kids in this incredible city. We need to build housing, we need to create jobs, and we need to keep bringing people back downtown, our front door to the world and the economic engine for our city. That’s why today I am proud to announce the BUILD Act with Supervisor Bilal Mahmood—a legislative package that will unlock stalled housing projects and create thousands of good union jobs. The BUILD Act will reform the transfer tax to incentivize investment in these housing projects and buildings downtown—stimulating new jobs for electricians, plumbers, and laborers. And we will put forward a ballot measure in November to ensure that transfer tax is paid on properties in foreclosure so we can offset revenue impacts. Our politicians used to take our workers and our families for granted. But those politicians are gone, and those days are over. We are now creating the conditions for our city’s success. By passing the BUILD Act, we will take the next step, creating the jobs and building the housing that San Franciscans deserve.

In one of the largest office leases since before the pandemic, Anthropic is taking over an entire building in downtown San Francisco. This expansion will bring more people to our downtown and strengthen our innovation economy. This new lease is a clear sign of our recovery—and a strong vote of confidence in our city.

San Francisco just recorded our lowest tent numbers since the City began the quarterly count in April 2019, a new record low. I am clear eyed about the challenges on our streets, but we have made real progress this year. We have sustained lows of tent encampments, and we will continue to coordinate across departments to get people off the street and into the help that they need.

Downtown is coming alive, with Third Thursdays on Ellis drawing thousands of people tonight. This stretch of Ellis Street is an entertainment zone that we created to make it easier for food and music to take over our streets. My administration will continue investing in solutions that bring people to downtown and help our city feel alive. Thank you to the team at John’s Grill for putting this on.

San Francisco was alive this weekend, with events across the city and people getting civically engaged. We are keeping this momentum going with more community activations all summer, including MintedSF. Starting Friday July 4th, Mint Plaza will be home to a new summer concert series that will bring free live music and cultural events to downtown every week. Investing in our cultural spaces and celebrations is what makes San Francisco special. Catch a show at MintedSF on a Friday this summer before the series ends on September 19.

Today, I am proud to submit a balanced budget that is fiscally responsible and strengthens our social safety net—so even in the face of federal cuts, San Franciscans know they can count on this city. If you walk down the street in San Francisco, you will see a city that’s alive: young people in parks, tourists enjoying our restaurants, and police officers talking to small business owners while walking the beat. There’s no doubt our city is moving in the right direction—and we still have so much work left to do. When families across San Francisco sit down for dinner at night, the rising cost of rent, healthcare, food, and gas has many asking whether they can afford to stay. In a region as wealthy as this one, in a moment where the world is looking to San Francisco to define the future, we cannot leave people behind—hard-working San Franciscans who make this city the vibrant, dynamic place we all know and love. This year’s budget closes a $642 million dollar two-year deficit—moving our city forward for all San Franciscans. I presented this budget this afternoon from one of the city’s benefits centers in the Mission, where hundreds of San Franciscans come every day to access healthcare, food assistance, and employment services. This budget strengthens the work happening right here, using funding from the emergency reserve we established last year to respond to sweeping federal cuts. It also funds critical public safety improvements, protects legal services for immigrant families, continues support for LGBTQ+ residents, and invests in proven programs that help keep families housed, move young people out of homelessness, and connect people to treatment. In San Francisco, we are proving that common sense and discipline can drive a broad economic recovery. In the weeks ahead, I will partner with Board President Mandelman, Budget Chair Chan, and the entire Board of Supervisors to finalize this budget. Last year, we stabilized the city’s finances. This year, in the face of new challenges, we are continuing to stand together as San Franciscans. San Francisco is a city on the rise, and we are not leaving anyone behind.

San Francisco needs a reset. Our city charter is one of the longest in the country. It is bloated. It is broken. And it only works for the people who know how to manipulate it—not everyday San Franciscans. Today, I’m proposing reforms to clean up our city charter and make the government, and me, more accountable to you. Here is the breakdown. First: we are going to fix the city’s broken contracting system to make sure that your tax dollars are being spent efficiently and transparently. By bringing contracting under one entity, the City Administrator, we can set consistent citywide standards that will cut red tape, reduce delays, and save taxpayer dollars. Second: we are going to make our ballots shorter and simpler. That long voter packet that you received in 2024 had 15 ballot measures on it. In the same election, Oakland had 3. San Jose had 1. San Francisco makes it so easy to put things on the ballot that our elected officials don’t have to do their jobs. The result? San Franciscans have to fill out lengthy, confusing ballots, including contradictory measures and sometimes poorly written laws. This will ensure that ballot measures reflect real citywide priorities—and that elected officials focus on the job voters sent them here to do: delivering results for the people of San Francisco. Third: accountability. San Franciscans expect our city to deliver world-class services. To do that, we need to be able to hold those in leadership accountable. But right now, our charter rewards bureaucracy and scatters responsibility—protecting those in power, even if they have demonstrated serious ethical lapses. These reforms would change that to ensure that when San Franciscans elect a mayor, they know who is responsible for delivering results. San Franciscans elect people to run their government, and those leaders should be accountable for whether it works. If it doesn’t, you should know exactly who to hold responsible—that’s the point of elections. This package of reforms is about results. It’s about accountability. It’s about making City Hall work for San Francisco.
