On 18 June 1963 at Wembley, undefeated 21 year old Cassius Clay predicted he would stop British champion Henry Cooper in the fifth. Cooper nearly wrecked that script, flooring Clay with his trademark left hook in the dying seconds of round 4. A torn glove bought Clay extra recovery time. He came out, opened a severe cut, and won by TKO at 2:15 of the fifth.

Sugar Ray Leonard vs Thomas Hearns Undisputed welterweight titles. Leonard vs unbeaten Hearns. Hearns boxed well early and led on all cards. Leonard’s eye swelled shut. In the 13th Leonard stormed back and nearly stopped him. In the 14th he pinned Hearns on the ropes, referee Davey Pearl waved it off. TKO 14 for Leonard, even though Hearns was still ahead on the scorecards. They rematched in 1989 and fought to a split draw. The 1981 fight is the classic.

Muhammad Ali vs Larry Holmes. Holmes dominated every round with his jab. Ali landed almost nothing and won zero rounds. After a brutal 10th, Angelo Dundee stopped it rather than let Ali continue. Holmes won by retirement. The fight is remembered as bittersweet: Holmes did his job, but beating a faded Ali brought little glory. It marked the visible end of Ali’s greatness.
