The first choice for the role of Tina Carlyle in "The Mask" (1994) was Anna Nicole Smith who had agreed to do the movie and then at the last minute, backed out to do "Naked Gun 33 1⁄3: The Final Insult" (1994). Director Chuck Russell was crushed and thought that the movie shouldn't be made, but they kept looking for another actor. One day, coming out from an Academy party, the producer and the team saw Cameron Diaz on the runway and everyone said, "Yeah, that’s the kind of person we’re looking for." Producer Robert Engelman turned to the casting agent and said, "Get her. Let’s at least interview her." Cameron Diaz was a model with no acting experience. Since the Studio wasn't convinced of her acting ability, they made her audition 12 times. Diaz said, I was ready to have a nervous breakdown. I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep. I got an ulcer.” Getting the job made it worse for her. ”I thought I was going to throw up my first day. Richard Gere was offered the part of Edward Lewis starring opposite to Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman" (1990), but he turned it down a few times. Gere felt that "There wasn't a part. There was just nothing. The joke was it was just a suit. You could put a suit on a goat and put it out there, and it would work." For the role, Julia Roberts did screen tests with 10 other actors including Charles Grodin. One day, Garry Marshall brought Julia Roberts to Richard Gere's office. He introduced them and excused himself to the restroom. "I was so mesmerized I don't remember Garry," Gere admitted. "I only remember the girl." When Marshall returned, he found that they had great chemistry. They were getting to know each other & were flirty. Then Marshall asked Gere, "How's it going?" Immediately, Julia Roberts, who was sitting across Gere's desk, took a Post-it note and wrote, "Please say yes" & pushed it towards Gere. Pope Francis considered "Babette's Feast" (1987) to be "One of the best movies he had ever seen" & it was one of his top 3 movies of all time. About the film, he said, "The story takes place in a very strict Calvinist community in Denmark. The protagonists, two sisters, daughters of a Protestant pastor, had each fallen in love but rejected this feeling because it was wrongly considered contrary to the very strict morals they had inherited. They lived a life of renunciation, not only in love but in everything, including food and clothing. A kind of continuous self-flagellation. The French cook Babette, a ‘foreigner’ in this context, after winning a rich lottery prize, decides to cook a sublime meal for the whole community, and by this gesture she manages to make everyone feel and see human beauty. She manages to make them perceive this divine pleasure that has been wrongly suppressed for too long. Choosing one’s own food is one of those choices. It is a powerful mechanism for change: it means rewarding one productive and economic model rather than another." Paul Verhoeven was very dissatisfied with "Hollow Man" (2000). He became so depressed that it took him 6 more years to make his next movie. It was also his last American film. He considers it the "Worst film" he has ever done & regrets making it. He said, “I decided after "Hollow Man" (2000), this is a movie, the first movie that I made that I thought I should not have made. It made money and this and that, but it really is not me anymore. I think many other people could have done that. I don’t think many people could have made 'Robocop' (1987) that way, or either 'Starship Troopers' (1997). But 'Hollow Man', I thought there might have been 20 directors in Hollywood who could have done that. I felt depressed with myself after 2002.”

When Robert De Niro arrived for the filming of "American Hustle" (2013), he met every cast member and shook their hands. De Niro met Christian Bale first and kind of blew by him like he was a nobody. Afterwards, he asked David O. Russell, "Who is that fat guy?". Russell replied, "That’s Christian Bale." He said, ‘No, no, no, the fat guy, the guy who’s talking to Jeremy Renner right now.’ Russell reaffirmed that it was Christian Bale. It was reported that after watching Satyajit Ray's "Pather Panchali" (1955) at the Cannes Film Festival, François Truffaut said, "I don't want to see a movie of peasants eating with their hands" and had stated that the movie was "Insipid". When Truffaut was asked about it in 1977, he retorted immediately & said, “On the contrary, I wanted to see 'Pather Panchali' once again after it ended. I did struggle with its pace initially but realised it had to be that way because the film isn’t about poverty at all. RIP Dolly Parton (1946-2026) Knowing that she'd be starring opposite Burt Reynolds in "The Best Little Wh0rehouse in Texas" (1982), it was Dolly Parton's idea to have Miss Mona and the Sheriff romantically involved, though she faced criticism from both the screenwriter and critics for this drastic deviation from the real-life story which inspired the film. She said, “When they started askin’ for suggestions, I said I would like to see more of a romance. Wouldn’t you feel like you wasted five dollars if you paid to see Wh0rehouse and you didn’t see me and Burt kiss? I was makin’ a joke, and I stuck to it. Roger Ebert gave a negative review of Mel Brooks's "Dracula: Dead and Loving It" (1995). One day, when Mel Brooks ran into Ebert, he said, "Listen, you, I made 21 movies. I’m very talented. I’ll live in history. I have a body of work. You only have a body.” Roger Ebert was saddened by the encounter as he was a big supporter of Mel Brooks' works from his debut. Ebert later wrote, "I was surprised he didn’t realize himself that 'Dracula: Dead and Loving It' (1995) just didn’t work. Yes, Brooks has put together a body of work and yes, a lot of it has made me laugh, but I would not be doing him a favor if I did not tell the truth."

When Sigourney Weaver was sent the script of "Aliens" (1986), she had no idea that a sequel was being made for "Alien" (1979) as the studio didn't inform her. After reading the script, Weaver thought it was "Magnificent" and "The Greatest script" she had ever read. She was blown away by the humour, humanity and action. Cameron was initially afraid to meet Weaver as he feared she would be as stern and intimidating as her Ripley character. After their meeting he was relieved. He said, “She was just this wonderful person, and I was so relieved that she saw some value in the script and where I was proposing to take the character.” Cameron was open to some of the changes to the script mentioned by Weaver. However, on the first day of the shoot, there was one hiccup. The shoot was in England and the sets were built. When Weaver arrived, she told Cameron that she was Anti-Gun advocate and she wasn't touching a gun. Cameron asked her, "Did you read the script?". She replied, "I read it. I understood there were guns in it, I just didn’t think Ripley had to pick up a gun except for a flamethrower.” Realizing that the script would require a major rewrite if he couldn’t convince Weaver to use the machine gun, Cameron took Weaver behind the studio and had her fire off the weapon a few times. Cameron said, “I’ll never forget her blasting away with this thing. And then there was this kind of sly look over to me, like ‘This is fun.'”. Weaver said, “It just shows how addictive guns are." while noting that she felt ashamed of the pleasure she took in shooting the rounds. But it didn't seem realistic enough. They also tried various other methods but failed to get the desired effect. During the filming of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1958), Elizabeth Taylor's husband Mike Todd died in a plane crash. The production was shut down for a day for the funeral & resumed without Elizabeth Taylor. Whether Taylor would return was an open question. Nearly a month had passed when she came to the studio unannounced in a limousine. She summoned Richard Brooks inside and asked, “What should I do?” He assured her the decision was hers to make, and she said, “Mike said I looked wonderful in the rushes. I think I should come back. I owe it to him.” Taylor’s health, always precarious, remained a concern. She had lost weight and appeared not to be eating properly, raising worries that she would not have the energy for filming even if she had the will. Richard Brooks devised a way to stimulate her appetite. He ordered real food for the birthday party scene and called for additional takes, blaming the crew for imaginary problems. Elizabeth Taylor said, “In each take I had to eat with simulated enthusiasm the sumptuous meal on the plate in front of me, I felt like gagging, but Richard kept insisting we do repeat shots.
