Cuba is not a tourist destination. Cuba is a nation where millions of people have lived for decades without basic freedoms under a communist dictatorship. Standing outside the United Nations today, my message is simple: the world must not ignore the reality facing the Cuban people. For more than 67 years, the Cuban regime has denied fundamental freedoms, imprisoned dissidents, silenced independent voices, and forced generations of Cubans to flee their homeland in search of liberty and opportunity. It is a contradiction for a regime accused by many human rights organizations of serious human rights violations to hold positions of influence within international human rights bodies. The focus should be on the Cuban people and their right to freedom, democracy, free elections, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and respect for human rights. The world must stop looking away. The Cuban people deserve freedom, dignity, and the opportunity to determine their own future. Cuba no es un destino turístico. Cuba es una nación donde millones de personas han vivido durante décadas sin libertades fundamentales bajo una dictadura comunista. Frente a las Naciones Unidas hoy, mi mensaje es simple: el mundo no puede seguir ignorando la realidad que vive el pueblo cubano. Por más de 67 años, el régimen cubano ha negado libertades fundamentales, ha encarcelado a disidentes, ha silenciado voces independientes y ha obligado a generaciones de cubanos a abandonar su patria en busca de libertad y oportunidades. Es una contradicción que un régimen señalado por numerosas organizaciones de derechos humanos por graves violaciones de los derechos humanos ocupe posiciones de influencia dentro de organismos internacionales dedicados precisamente a la defensa de esos derechos. El enfoque debe estar en el pueblo cubano y en su derecho a la libertad, la democracia, las elecciones libres, la libertad de expresión, la libertad religiosa y el respeto a los derechos humanos. El mundo debe dejar de mirar hacia otro lado. El pueblo cubano merece libertad, dignidad y la oportunidad de decidir su propio futuro.

The Cuban regime wants the world to believe that new promises will solve the crisis facing the Cuban people. But after 67 years of broken promises, the reality is impossible to hide. Cuba is suffering through one of the worst energy, economic, and humanitarian crises in its history. Families endure daily blackouts. Food and medicine are scarce. Basic services are collapsing. Millions of Cubans have been forced to leave their homeland in search of freedom and opportunity. Miguel Díaz-Canel can announce new plans, new promises, and new slogans, but the problem is not a lack of government programs. The problem is a failed communist socialist system that has denied freedom, crushed private enterprise, and silenced those who dare to speak the truth. The Cuban people do not need more propaganda. They need freedom. They need democracy. They need free elections, respect for human rights, economic opportunity, and the ability to determine their own future. The solution to Cuba’s crisis is not another government package. The solution is ending the communist socialist dictatorship and allowing the Cuban people to live in liberty. Let us be clear: the communist socialist dictatorship in Cuba is not only a threat to the Cuban people. It is also a national security risk to the United States of America through its alliances with hostile foreign actors, its support for anti-democratic movements, and its continued efforts to undermine freedom and stability throughout our hemisphere. As Miami-Dade County Tax Collector, I will continue putting the people of Miami-Dade County first. We will continue defending our community, upholding the rule of law, protecting the values that make America exceptional, and standing firmly against those who threaten our freedom and security. From the United Nations, I want to send a clear message to the world: Cuba is not a tourist destination. Cuba is a prison, a concentration camp controlled by the murderous Castro communist socialist dictatorship that has oppressed, silenced, imprisoned, and separated families for more than six decades. The United Nations cannot continue being silent or acting as accomplices to a dictatorship that violates human rights every single day. Miami-Dade County will not be used as a platform to finance or sustain a regime that represses its people and violates federal law. 🚨 UPDATE 🚨 Last night, someone attempted to destroy the menorah we lit for the first time at the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector’s Office. I want to share an update with our community. The individual responsible has been identified and formally charged. I am grateful for the swift response of law enforcement and for the Good Samaritan who lifted the menorah back up when someone tried to tear it down. The menorah will be repaired and relit. This tradition will continue every year, stronger and more united than ever. Acts of hate will not define us. Light, faith, and unity will.
