Expecting a remote village or market town to have the same ethnic mix as a major city/town ignores how people have chosen where to live for generations. The government’s 1.5 million-home target is pushing new-build estates into many semi-rural areas that used to feel quiet and unspoilt. Villages and market towns that people once chose for space and character are now getting large housing schemes on their doorsteps.
