DeSantis explains the New Right in 60 seconds. He knows What Time It Is: “We’re creating a model for what a free society should be. Yes: freedom for you to not be constrained by government—all conservatives have always believed that—but also, freedom for you to live your life without having the pathologies of the Left imposed upon you from all the other institutions in society.”

This is how a stupid person thinks a smart person speaks

I’ve always found it exceptionally weird how Carlson talks about nuclear weapons—he claims they were created by demonic forces, that nobody knows how they were invented, and that after 1945 these demonic forces run America. That “people with a weird and destructive instinct have taken over the levers of power.” It sounds so strange and torture because he’s trying to play coy and avoid saying what he really thinks. Let’s all not pretend to be stupid: Tucker knows which group of people were responsible for inventing nuclear weapons. (Clue in the next tweet.)

Sonny Rollins plays “I Can’t Get Started” in Paris (1965). What’s happening here is magic: Sonny at his absolute peak. I understand why Rollins is less immediately accessible than other famous jazz figures—as the supreme improviser over chord changes, you really have to be familiar with the tune’s changes for his brilliance to hit you. That so many listeners love Sonny despite not having this background is due almost entirely to his powerful tone.

I’ve never seen anything like this. Cam Higby debates Phil Tourney, the most outspoken of the USS Liberty veterans. I feel sorry for people like Tourney—he’s clearly a troubled guy who’s been through a lot—but devoting so much of his life to an obvious lie undercuts quite a bit of the sympathy I have for his experience. He strikes me as a decent guy who’s allowed himself to be hypnotized by a cottage industry of anti-Israel obsessives, and now just repeats their narrative. Wild stuff.

Few things were as hip was American music in the late 40s, as bebop language was seeping into the vernacular of jazz and pop music. The King Cole Trio plays the catchy, sophisticated and jivey, “It’s Better to Be By Yourself” and “Solid Potato Salad.”
