Over 10 years ago, I worked for a CEO who turned out to be a really bad guy. If the allegations prove true, Clearwater businessman Leo Govoni should face prosecution for stealing millions from individuals with severe disabilities. As anticipated, my opponents in the Florida Governor's race have decided to use this devastating crime to play ugly politics. It's not surprising. Mr. Govoni was very well known in political circles, contributing to the likes of Rick Scott, Ashley Moody, Anna Paulina Luna, Marco Rubio, Pam Bondi, myself, and many other candidates, both Democratic and Republican. And so while my opponents raise this issue with vindictiveness, I'm running a different type of campaign. Politics is about holding the public trust, and hopefully doing so with honesty and a little bit of kindness. So I don't run from this conversation, I welcome it. I also know these crimes were possible in Florida because for too long our disability community has been victim to unforgiving policies, lack of funding, and failed oversight. We shamefully rank near the bottom nationally in available services. If this campaign leads us to be a state that finally champions our disabled community, then it will have been worthwhile. We may not be able to expect the highest standards from others in politics, but we can hold ourselves to those standards. That is my promise to you.
