This has sparked a backlash from Black Americans, who are speaking out about the concerning treatment of Black people in Gaza and the broader Arab world, including the legacy of the Arab slave trade, where millions of Africans were captured and sold into slavery. This discord stems from historical grievances, particularly the Arab slave trade, which deeply impacted African societies from the 7th century until the 20th century. Millions of Africans were enslaved and sold across the Arab world, with a significant number ending up in regions that are today predominantly Muslim, including parts of the Arabian Peninsula and the Levant. The brutal conditions of this trade and its legacy have left lasting scars. Some Black Americans are uncomfortable with aligning with the pro-Palestinian pro-Hamas movement, especially when it appears dismissive of the historical suffering of Black people under Arab rule. This discomfort is heightened when elements within the movement are supportive of Hamas, the terror organization responsible for the October 7th massacre.
