We revealed that DPANN YN1 is deficient in essential metabolic processes and requires host resources to proliferate. CryoET revealed an enormous attachment organelle in the DPANN envelope that bridges the DPANN and host cytoplasms for intercellular exchange.

In our latest preprint, we show that the DPANN ARM-1 interacts with its host (AS-7) through intercellular proteinaceous nanotubes. Intriguingly, these tubes are assembled by the HOST, which likely suggests that the host also has a vested interest in this relationship!
