some quick thoughts from the DDF presser just now: Ratzinger has never been cited so much by the current DDF as today in defence of the document Yet Ratzinger, in more than 30 years at the Vatican, never thought it fit to publish a Nota against Mary as Co-Redemptrix. Given Joseph Ratzinger’s attention to doctrinal correctness, we should ask why. Card.Fernandez is very attentive to what is published on the Internet: he mentioned several times “some groups on the Web who create doubt…instead of harmony.” He noted that someone had broken the embargo & already published the document on the Internet. He lamented that these early news reports about the document did not give the whole picture thus causing people in the comments to be upset. The presser was held at the Jesuit Curia, open to the public, & not in the Vatican Press Office, open only to accredited journalists, as would be normal. Card. Fernandez said the reason was that “the document did not lend itself to dialogue between journalists & the Dicastery.” In the event, no dialogue with anyone was possible because questions were not allowed. Since it was open to the public, an Italian man who gave me only his first name, GianFilippo, interrupted the Cardinal’s presentation twice, heatedly denouncing some of the points on Mary. He is a layman who has studied the subject & had much to say, summed up by this final outburst: “God doesn’t like it, Your Eminence!” Card. Fernandez retorted by reminding the audience that debates over Marian dogmas are some of the most bitter fights in the history of the Church, recalling that at the Council of Trent they even came to physical blows over it.
