The U.S. has killed more than 200 people in over 60 strikes on boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, claiming without evidence that the boats were engaged in narcotrafficking. Amanda Klasing (Amanda M Klasing) of Amnesty International USA says these are extrajudicial killings that constitute murder. “U.S. taxpayers should be outraged, absolutely outraged, that their money is going to murder as a policy,” says Klasing.

Rutgers University abruptly withdrew its invitation to a prominent bio-tech entrepreneur and alumnus to speak at its engineering school convocation. Rami Elghandour had been scheduled to deliver a graduation address on May 15, but his invitation was canceled over what the university said were complaints about his social media posts on Israel and Palestine. Elghandour is also executive producer of the Oscar-nominated film "The Voice of Hind Rajab." "It seemed unbelievable to me that for a class of 1,000 students, that a handful of students having complaints would lead to this outcome," he says. "Disagreement is not harm. Having a different point of view is not harming these students in any way to lead to this sort of outcome."

Recent state-level elections in India have further consolidated the power of the ruling Hindu nationalist BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “This is for the first time that I am observing on the ground … that the general public does not think the elections are free and fair in India,” says Arfa Khanum Sherwani (Arfa Khanum Sherwani), an Indian journalist and senior editor at The Wire. The BJP won the crucial border state of West Bengal for the first time, defeating one of Modi's most outspoken opponents, Mamata Banerjee. She has accused the Modi government of using the Election Commission of India to defeat her party by deleting 9 million names from the polls.
