True leadership is not measured by proximity to the spotlight or by claiming the success of others. It is demonstrated through judgment: knowing when to lead, when to step back, and how to recognise those whose achievement is being celebrated. In a democracy, public office carries a responsibility to embody dignity, restraint, respect for institutions and service to the public—not the pursuit of personal acclaim.

According to reports from Serbia, accredited election observers and activists were beaten and intimidated outside polling stations in Bajina Bašta. Witnesses describe groups of individuals linked to Aleksandar Vučić’s SNS operating around polling stations, creating fear and suppressing oversight. This is what Aleksandar Vučić’s democracy looks like: thugs at the ballot box. Not an incident — a system. When violence protects power, elections are no longer free. She simply described, with cold precision, what is unfolding before our eyes: pressure on Ukraine to surrender, a cynical convergence with Putin, and the erosion of the values that have underpinned the West since 1945. This is not theatre. It is the defence of democracy, sovereignty and human dignity. What is at stake today is the credibility of the democratic world itself.

Europe cannot afford to stay a loose club of vetoes and hesitations. In Leuven, Belgium, Mario Draghi put it clearly: coordinating national interests is not the same as acting as one power. Where Europe has chosen federation – trade, competition, the single market – it is respected and heard. Where it has not – defence, foreign policy, industrial strategy – it is divided and vulnerable. A Union strong on trade but weak on security will always see its strengths used against it. Europe must choose: fragmented nations, or a real European power.

Serbian prosecutors have opened an investigation claiming that students planned to simulate the use of a “sonic cannon” during the huge Belgrade protest of 15 March 2025. This is outrageous: instead of identifying who ordered and used that banned acoustic weapon, the authorities are now targeting its victims. The videos and testimonies show that something very real happened: peaceful students and citizens were suddenly thrown into panic during a silent tribute, with many reporting nausea, dizziness and headaches. That weapon did not fall from the sky. Someone used it, and someone covered it up. Vučić and those responsible bear a grave political and moral responsibility. A system that still has no real accountability for the Novi Sad canopy collapse, and now investigates the victims of the sonic cannon, shows how rotten Serbia’s institutions remain. Serbia deserves truth and justice, not intimidation.

What happened yesterday in Belgrade is not just unacceptable — it is dangerous. A university raided without warning. No clear legal basis. Cameras ready, humiliation staged. As Rector Vladan Đokić said, this was never about investigating a tragedy: it was about sending a message — “look what happens to those who refuse to stay silent.” But another message broke through. While police entered one door, thousands of students arrived at another. Not organised. Not intimidated. Not silent. Because they understood what is at stake: if a university can be targeted, no citizen is safe. Our Secretary General Sandro Gozi was clear: “A power that sends police into a university because the rector stands with students is a power that fears freedom, fears accountability and fears the truth.” This is a turning point. Not only for Serbia — for Europe. Silence now would mean acceptance.

The Serbian government has crossed a red line. A minister openly declaring she would have “ethnically cleansed Kosovo” is not expressing an opinion—it is glorifying crimes against humanity and reviving the ideology that plunged the Balkans into war. As EU Commissioner Marta Kos said, every word counts. Such words disqualify anyone from public office. President Vučić must dismiss Snežana Paunović immediately. Today in Belgrade, thousands rallied in a student-organised protest against Александар Вучић Aleksandar Vučić’s rule, demanding justice, accountability and an end to corruption. Vučić can look at the square from a window; he should recognise what is staring back: a country tired of opacity, intimidation and democratic theatre. Students opened the road, citizens filled it. Serbia deserves transparency, rule of law and a European future. The EDP stands with them.

Turkey is not Russia. I think the model of President Erdogan is Russia, autocracy, but Turkey is not Russia. Turkey belong to a stronger democratic tradition, and Turkey cannot afford the isolation that Putin thinks Russia cannot afford. This is a bipartisan initiative because when democracy and rule of law are at stake, there is no partisan privileges between the democratic forces. Today in Istanbul, despite an initial police blockade, thousands gathered outside the Palace of Justice to denounce the imprisonment of Ekrem İmamoğlu (International) and the absurd accusations of espionage. Just two days ago, after the government seized control of the last opposition TV channel, it became clear that President Erdoğan’s goal is to dismantle every remaining bastion of democracy — freedom of the press, association, and speech itself.
