The chant “Europe, Europe, Europe” rising from the banks of the Danube, in front of the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest, where Péter Magyar Magyar Péter (Ne féljetek) is celebrating his electoral victory, is a cry that shakes the conscience of us all. It lifts our spirits, fills us with joy, and gives us hope that this era of sovereigntism and populism may soon be consigned to the past. Long live a united and democratic Europe!

Mark Carney Mark Carney ’s words in Dublin are not courtesy diplomacy; they are a political fact. In a world more dangerous and divided, Canada is choosing Europe: on defence procurement, critical minerals, climate, technology and trade. This is the Europe the EDP fights for: sovereign enough to protect itself, open enough to build alliances, strong enough to shape the new international order with democracies. Not a spectator. A power.

According to reports from Serbia, accredited election observers and activists were beaten and intimidated outside polling stations in Bajina Bašta. Witnesses describe groups of individuals linked to Aleksandar Vučić’s SNS operating around polling stations, creating fear and suppressing oversight. This is what Aleksandar Vučić’s democracy looks like: thugs at the ballot box. Not an incident — a system. When violence protects power, elections are no longer free. Friends of the European People’s Party: how can you justify this? Is this really the standard you accept from your own political family?

Ankara’s squares are speaking for a country that refuses to be intimidated. After court moves against CHP leader Özgür Özel Özgür Özel Özgür Özel İletişim and police pressure on the opposition, thousands have answered with flags, voices and courage. Turkey’s democracy belongs to its citizens, not to fear, not to courts used as weapons, not to any ruler who confuses power with ownership. As European Democrats, we stand with those defending justice, pluralism and the rule of law. Ekrem İmamoğlu (International)

Those images below are recent scenes from Kharkiv, Ukraine. The woman speaking above is Alice Weidel , leader of Germany’s AfD , arguing that Putin should simply be left to do as he pleases. Imagine Churchill saying Hitler had to be accommodated. Imagine De Gaulle accepting occupation. Imagine the Italian partisans deciding fascism was inevitable. Neville Chamberlain already tried appeasement once. This time is even worse, because nobody can say they do not know what Putin is.

At the Munich Security Conference, Hillary Clinton Hillary Clinton did not exaggerate. She did not rant. She simply described, with cold precision, what is unfolding before our eyes: pressure on Ukraine to surrender, a cynical convergence with Putin, and the erosion of the values that have underpinned the West since 1945. This is not theatre. It is the defence of democracy, sovereignty and human dignity. What is at stake today is the credibility of the democratic world itself.

Today in Belgrade, thousands rallied in a student-organised protest against Александар Вучић Aleksandar Vučić’s rule, demanding justice, accountability and an end to corruption. Vučić can look at the square from a window; he should recognise what is staring back: a country tired of opacity, intimidation and democratic theatre. Students opened the road, citizens filled it. Serbia deserves transparency, rule of law and a European future. The EDP stands with them.

Europe cannot afford to stay a loose club of vetoes and hesitations. In Leuven, Belgium, Mario Draghi put it clearly: coordinating national interests is not the same as acting as one power. Where Europe has chosen federation – trade, competition, the single market – it is respected and heard. Where it has not – defence, foreign policy, industrial strategy – it is divided and vulnerable. A Union strong on trade but weak on security will always see its strengths used against it. Europe must choose: fragmented nations, or a real European power.

What happened yesterday in Belgrade is not just unacceptable — it is dangerous. A university raided without warning. No clear legal basis. Cameras ready, humiliation staged. As Rector Vladan Đokić said, this was never about investigating a tragedy: it was about sending a message — “look what happens to those who refuse to stay silent.” But another message broke through. While police entered one door, thousands of students arrived at another. Not organised. Not intimidated. Not silent. Because they understood what is at stake: if a university can be targeted, no citizen is safe. Our Secretary General Sandro Gozi was clear: “A power that sends police into a university because the rector stands with students is a power that fears freedom, fears accountability and fears the truth.” This is a turning point. Not only for Serbia — for Europe. Silence now would mean acceptance.

Anne Applebaum Anne Applebaum puts it plainly: autocrats do not fear democracy because it is polite, but because it is powerful. Free speech, the rule of law and separation of powers are not “boring” rituals. They are the language that makes dictators tremble. Putin fears Ukraine’s 2014 courage because it proves people can still rise for freedom. Europe must stop apologising for liberal democracy. It is our shield, our promise, and their nightmare.

Kneeling, hands tied, facing the wall — this is the image of Vučić’s Serbia today. These are students and peaceful citizens whose only “crime” is asking for freedom, justice, transparency, and an end to corruption. Serbia is an EU candidate country. Silence from Brussels is not neutrality — it is complicity. Europe cannot look away while democracy is humiliated on its doorstep.

There are moments in history that come rarely—and change everything. Yesterday in Cyprus, Emmanuel Macron pointed to one of them. When the American, Russian and Chinese presidents find themselves aligned in weakening Europe, the message is unmistakable. Our fragmentation is their opportunity. This is the decisive moment: either Europe steps up as a united political force, or others will shape its future.

Turkey is not Russia. I think the model of President Erdogan is Russia, autocracy, but Turkey is not Russia. Turkey belong to a stronger democratic tradition, and Turkey cannot afford the isolation that Putin thinks Russia cannot afford. This is a bipartisan initiative because when democracy and rule of law are at stake, there is no partisan privileges between the democratic forces. And this is also the reason why we European Democrats, we are so keen in following, supporting your fight, your fight for democracy

“Bella ciao” rises in Belgrade: one accordion, then a crowd, then a protest. Today, pro-European Serbs took to the streets against a leadership that is steadily pulling the country away from Europe. This is more than dissent—it is a call to return to democratic standards, rule of law, and a shared European destiny. When a song of resistance becomes a collective voice, the message is clear. We, the European Democrats, stand with them.

Today in Istanbul, despite an initial police blockade, thousands gathered outside the Palace of Justice to denounce the imprisonment of Ekrem İmamoğlu (International) and the absurd accusations of espionage. Just two days ago, after the government seized control of the last opposition TV channel, it became clear that President Erdoğan’s goal is to dismantle every remaining bastion of democracy — freedom of the press, association, and speech itself. At EDP, we know where we stand: always beside Turkey’s democrats, always beside Ekrem İmamoğlu 🇪🇺🤝🇹🇷

When police storm a university and attack students, something deeper is broken. In Belgrade, images show repression where dialogue should lead. Vučić, is this the debate you want? Batons in the streets instead of arguments on a stage? Europe believes in confrontation through ideas, not force. If you have answers, face Sandro Gozi in an open debate. Democracy is not silence imposed—it is voices heard.

Yesterday’s local elections in several Serbian cities marked a dramatic turning point. The polls went ahead despite electoral rolls being illegally inflated, while the entire process unfolded in a climate of violence and intimidation fuelled by Vučić’s regime. Observers were attacked, journalists detained and citizens beaten, while the police remained passive — or even sided with Vučić’s thugs. The raid on the NPS party headquarters, with its president and others held for hours, demonstrates the lengths to which Vučić is prepared to go to control the political arena. Vučić’s narrative is deeply distorted: he accuses others of fraud while his regime continues to undermine Serbian democracy. This is entirely incompatible with Serbia’s European path, and the European Commission must act accordingly.

“Ruszkik haza! Russian go home,” echoes through the streets of Budapest as citizens celebrate the victory of Tisza over Orbán. A historic moment that pushes back the plans of Putin, Trump and Xi Jinping to use Hungary to weaken the European Union. Hungarians have taken their country back. Welcome back to Europe: today it is their victory—and, in many ways, a victory for all of us.
