POLICE WARN AGAINST UNLAWFUL PROTESTS AHEAD OF INAUGURATION By Victoria Kayeye Yambani The Zambia Police Service has issued a strong warning against planned unlawful processions, assemblies and protests across the country, including during Tuesday’s presidential inauguration. Police Inspector General Graphel Musamba says the Service has received credible intelligence that certain groups and individuals are mobilising and inciting members of the public to participate in unlawful protests. He says police are also aware of efforts to mobilise people to protest against the detention of certain suspects currently in police custody. While acknowledging that Article 21 of the Constitution guarantees the right to freedom of assembly and association, Mr Musamba says the right must be exercised within the law and is subject to limitations necessary to maintain public safety and order and protect the rights and freedoms of others. The Police Chief says the Zambia Police Service has a constitutional and statutory responsibility to maintain law and order, protect life and property, and ensure public safety and security. He has warned that anyone who participates in, organises, facilitates or supports unlawful activities will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law. Members of the public have also been cautioned against being incited into violence, obstructing lawful activities or engaging in any conduct that amounts to a criminal offence. Police have further assured that all persons in custody are being accorded their constitutional and legal rights, while urging the public to remain calm, law-abiding and cooperative with law enforcement agencies during this period. #NewsOnTheGo

POLICE RECOVER 22 ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION, CALL ON SEAN TEMBO By Darius Choonya Police in Lusaka have arrested six suspects in connection with the possession of offensive weapons. The suspects were found in a motor vehicle, registration number BAD 8622, in which police recovered 22 rounds of ammunition and other merchandise. 32-YEAR-OLD MAN ALLEGEDLY KILLED BY SUSPECTED CADRES By Niza Vomo A 32-year-old man of Lusaka's John Laing Township has died after allegedly being assaulted by suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres. The deceased has been identified as Nelson Chikubi. According to his family, Mr Chikubi was allegedly assaulted on Friday, July 3, after repairing a radio for a client. They allege that when the client tested the radio, a song associated with the opposition began playing, prompting suspected UPND cadres to attack him. The family says he was treated and discharged from Chawama Level One Hospital but later developed complications. He was rushed back to the hospital, where he died the following day. When contacted for comment, UPND Deputy Secretary General Getrude Imenda said she could not comment on the matter unless it was in the public domain. NKOMBO RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT HICHILEMA'S ALLEGATIONS, URGES SUPPORTERS TO STAY FOCUSED By Helga Chibwe Former Local Government and Rural Development Minister and former Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Gary Nkombo has dismissed allegations made against him by President Hakainde Hichilema during a rally in Mazabuka this afternoon. Mr Nkombo said he has every right to contest the parliamentary seat as an independent candidate, citing Article 51 of the Constitution of Zambia, which allows eligible candidates to stand as independents. He also refuted President Hichilema's claims that he is working with NRPUP President Brian Mundubile because of the candle symbol on his campaign materials. Mr Nkombo explained that he did not choose or create the symbol, stating that it was allocated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ). Responding to the President's other remarks, Mr Nkombo said he would not address them, describing them as abusive and lacking truth. He added that he was among those who suffered intimidation and beatings during the Patriotic Front (PF) administration in support of President Hichilema. Mr Nkombo has since urged his supporters to remain focused on the campaign and work hard, stressing that he is no longer a member of the UPND. During the rally, President Hichilema alleged that Mr Nkombo was working with NRPUP President Brian Mundubile and accused him of failing to improve roads during his nearly 20 years as Mazabuka Central MP.
