Aliens was released on this day 40 years ago in 1986. This is one of my favorite scenes in one of my top 5 favorite films. I think it’s the best “gearing up for battle” scene ever. The audio countdown. The score. The elevator itself acting as its own countdown; descent into hell. And my favorite thing is Sigourney Weaver’s acting. She’s scared, and she’s mustering the courage to do something that seems like suicide. She’s not the physically strongest character. She is the most brave. She’s not a soldier. Bravery is not being unafraid. It’s doing something in spite of that fear. All of other tension and stakes is on her face. Spellbinding.
