If I could point to one moment that changed the direction of my life, I’d point to Hurricane Helene. I wasn’t home when the storm hit. I hadn’t lived there in years. But I’m a hillbilly, and once a hillbilly, always a hillbilly. My ancestors were robbed by the TVA during the creation of Fontana Dam; their bones were ripped from their final resting places and moved to new locations. They were forced from their lands when the federal government created the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They were cheated out of a road that led to their family burial grounds. I grew up on those stories, but they felt distant—until Helene. When Helene came, I knew Mamaw and Papaw were right all along: Heritage hillbillies? The government couldn’t give a damn about us. Their storm response was proof. I saw it, and it changed everything. Think I’m alone? Think again. Thousands of us saw it: devastation, heartbreak, and government abandonment. And tonight, some of the biggest voices who covered Helene in real time are coming together to talk about what really happened in the aftermath.

It appears I’ve come under fire by some republicans for interviewing Whatley. Weird, but okay. Let’s discuss, shall we? First and foremost, I’m a podcaster. That’s what podcasters do. They have conversations with people - especially high profile people. That’s kinda the whole point of having a podcast. Then I full on endorsed Whatley during our interview. But why? Why would the NC Queen cheer on a guy from **shudders** Michigan to win Tillis’s open senate seat? That’s easy: Cooper was a tyrant of a governor who will be a tyrant of a senator. He failed native North Carolinians consistently and repeatedly over his 40 years in office. Even worse? He will push for a radical progressive agenda - something that is squarely at odds with the culture of North Carolina. Whatley may not be perfect - but he IS the better choice. That’s why I’m cheering on a non native North Carolinian for our US Senate seat - because I know he’s a better representative of my views and my way of life than the homegrown politician. That’s just common sense. I reckon some folks weren’t blessed with that. Pity. 🤷🏼♀️

An awful lot of folks seem determined to rewrite what Hurricane Helene and its aftermath actually looked like. Let me remind you: 👉🏼whole families were lost 👉🏼communication disappeared during the storm 👉🏼relief trailers sat untouched in Hickory because FEMA “didn’t know how to get them into the mountains” 👉🏼businesses were washed away - many of them will never return 👉🏼there are still road closures two years later 👉🏼parts of the BRP and the GSMNP remain closed 👉🏼hundreds, if not thousands, of families still haven’t had their homes repaired 👉🏼whole communities will never be the same… like Swannanoa 👉🏼Biden’s FEMA skipped over conservative homes and lied by telling the media that bands of armed hillbillies were terrorizing volunteers 👉🏼Cooper started pulling the National Guard out of WNC in November, despite the desperate need for continued debris removal 👉🏼victims were nearly kicked out of their hotels in the middle of a snow storm And to add insult to injury, now I’m seeing influencers and media personalities tell people we need to “focus on the positive.” No. You want to make your little video? Make it. You want to post your pretty pictures and say thank you? Go right ahead. But don’t confuse positivity with pretending the devastation or the failures didn’t happen. And don’t you dare tell generational hillbillies how we’re supposed to feel about Helene. She stole homes - sometimes even the land under people’s feet. She took jobs. She ended lives. And she reminded WNC that it is the land of the forgotten. You don’t get to rewrite that experience because the truth isn’t pretty enough for your feed.

NCORR was the entity created to handle recovery and resiliency following hurricanes Florence and Matthew. They were in control of a BILLION dollars. Let’s get something straight, y’all: I’m not perfect. I’m a Christian. But I’m not a good one. I believe in Jesus 100%. But I cuss like a sailor. I’m quick to anger. I’ll throw these hands. I’m absolutely riddled with sin. If I get past the pearly gates, I’ll wind up on the Southside of Heaven where folks are listening to Bocephus and drinking moonshine. And I’m okay with that. Here’s what I’m not okay with: I’m not okay with someone being disrespectful to me or anyone else, especially in an instance like this. For those of y’all who don’t know Renatta, you should go follow her. She’s inspirational. She makes me want to be a better Christian. She’s full of love and light. Her disability? It’s insignificant. Renatta is often attacked by people on the left. Folks call her the r-word for standing up for her beliefs. Yeah. The all accepting left… picking on a woman for not fitting their standard of normal. Anytime I see it, my heart breaks. It makes me angry. I worked with special needs kids throughout middle and high school. Autism is rampant in the younger generation of my family. My nephew? He’s non-verbal. So when Cory here decided to attack me in her comments rather than on my turf? It made my teeth itch. Why would you attempt to change the conversation away from such a touchy subject? Who does that? I blocked him. But Cory? He tracked down my email. Don’t be like Cory, y’all. Be better than Cory. Be better than me. Be like Renatta.

Three days ago, the NC House Oversight Committee held a hearing on the death of Dominique Moody. I’ve paid close attention to this case… DSS was in and out of my life when I was a child. I once had a social worker look at my black eye and call me a liar. My sister? Her high school years were spent in an orphanage because DSS refused to place her with multiple relatives who were all excellent candidates to foster her. Every time NC DSS screws up with a child, I plea for reforms to the system. But the reforms I’m seeing being floated around? They’re not nearly good enough. North Carolina’s children deserve so much better.
