If I could point to one moment that changed the direction of my life, I’d point to Hurricane Helene. I wasn’t home when the storm hit. I hadn’t lived there in years. But I’m a hillbilly, and once a hillbilly, always a hillbilly. My ancestors were robbed by the TVA during the creation of Fontana Dam; their bones were ripped from their final resting places and moved to new locations. They were forced from their lands when the federal government created the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They were cheated out of a road that led to their family burial grounds. I grew up on those stories, but they felt distant—until Helene. When Helene came, I knew Mamaw and Papaw were right all along: Heritage hillbillies? The government couldn’t give a damn about us. Their storm response was proof. I saw it, and it changed everything. Think I’m alone? Think again. Thousands of us saw it: devastation, heartbreak, and government abandonment. And tonight, some of the biggest voices who covered Helene in real time are coming together to talk about what really happened in the aftermath.

I was doing so much better over the last few days… finally finding my inner peace after the partition proceedings in Haywood County. And then, like always, something happened to stir it all up again. The child of the person who has essentially legally stolen something they were never intended to have reached out to me. That child? They’re not very happy either. And now I’m lost. I was ready to give up and just pay the money they’re asking for, even though that’s wrong on every level. Because that’s easy. It takes the stress away. But knowing that even their child knows what’s happened is dirty? That makes me wonder if I should dust myself off and keep fighting. What would you do? 🤔

NC State Auditor, Dave Boliek, released a report on NCORR back in November. Y’all remember NCORR, right? NCORR was the entity created to handle recovery and resiliency following hurricanes Florence and Matthew. They were in control of a BILLION dollars. Years later, we discovered they were short hundreds of millions of dollars and hundreds of North Carolinians were still living in hotels waiting on home repairs. X is supposed to support free speech, allowing us to engage in discourse that hopefully changes hearts and minds. Policing our language is unacceptable - especially if we aren’t breaking the rules. The word redneck is NOT a slur. I’m proud of my redneck streak - it’s part of my heritage. The first written record of the term redneck came from a travelogue written in 1830. It was used to describe the Scottish farmers of Cross Creek (present day Fayetteville), North Carolina. How are we supposed to reclaim our language and spread truth if the X overlords won’t allow it? I’m seriously disappointed.

The land a hillbilly lives on is like their mother. Mamaw and Papaw knew that. It’s why they wrote their will the way they did - to keep it in our family. But their children? Thinking they knew better, they bypassed Mamaw and Papaw’s will. The result? I’m getting screwed by people who ain’t even my blood.
