The depth psychologist Carl Jung, possibly as early as the 1920s, based on a trip he made to America, predicted that American whites would eventually be unable to resist the heavy downward pull of the primitive life of blacks. Not only did whites collect, preserve, and identify these artifacts, they reconstructed African history itself. Blacks had no written records, and barely any verifiable oral traditions. White scholars combined multiple methodologies -- oral, archaeological, linguistic, anthropological and ethnographic -- to write the history of Africans. Whites employed systematic interviews and cross-referenced oral accounts with other sources to verify their reliability, distinguishing between myth and factual recollection. It was Whites who developed stratigraphic analysis, radiocarbon dating to establish chronologies and identify historical and cultural background of items like masks, statues, beads, pottery. Through comparative linguistics, Whites estimated the divergence of languages, their origins, contacts with other cultures (such as Arabic or Portuguese influences). One of the greatest tragedies is unfolding right before our eyes: Vienna, the most beautiful city in the world -- the city of Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, and Schubert -- is already majority nonwhite and Muslim for its under-18 population. Within 2 or likely 1 decade it will be majority nonwhite and its white population will be old and marginalized. Tyler Oliveira's documentary on the Hasidic Jewish community in New Jersey challenges (by implication) the established narrative that Whites in Europe were responsible for keeping Jews out of society due to their "xenophobia" and "bigotry". On the contrary, what we see in Lakewood, New Jersey, is a standard pattern of Jewish behavior inside Western societies: a tribal insularity that prioritizes the in-group interests of Jews over integration with the broader society. Hasidic communities in Lakewood maintain a high degree of ingroup preference, exclusion of outsiders, xenophobia towards "strangers," and strict adherence to "irrational" religious laws derived from the Talmud and other texts. This intolerant behavior includes endogamy (marrying within the group), Yiddish as a primary language in social life, separate education systems, and business dealing that exclude outsiders, and endemic networking in favor of Jewish groups. The Jewish communities in medieval and early modern Europe exhibited very similar traits. This context of Jewish behavior is necessary to understand European "discriminatory actions," such as expulsions from England in 1290 and Spain in 1492, as well as pogroms in Russia during the 19th century. These actions by Europeans are framed today as irrational or xenophobic hatred driven by Christian exclusion and closed-minded theology. In reality, the behavior of Europeans was a reaction toward Jewish self-segregating. It was this behavior, not European intolerance, that instigated resentment and discriminatory responses from host populations. In Lakewood, we see aggressive real estate practices that displace non-Hasidic residents, mirroring historical accusations in Europe where Jews were blamed for economic dominance in trades like moneylending while remaining closed-off from Europeans. While during the Enlightenment figures like Moses Mendelssohn advocated for Jewish integration, Orthodox Jews resisted, viewing it as a threat to identity. It was this reluctance to deal fairly with outsiders, Jewish xenophobia or tribalism, that fueled backlashes against Jews for not "becoming like us."
