Fistula surgery is performed to treat an anal fistula, an abnormal tunnel that forms between the inside of the anal canal and the skin around the anus. This condition usually develops after an infection or abscess that fails to heal properly. During surgery, the goal is to remove the infected tunnel completely and allow the tissue to heal from the inside out, preventing the infection from coming back. The most common procedure is called fistulotomy, where the surgeon carefully opens the fistula tract so it can drain and heal naturally.
