The Toronto Blue Jays jump from worst to first wasn’t luck or coincidence — it was the product of a clear philosophy led by first-year hitting coach David Popkins. Popkins brought in a modern model for team offense: emphasizing bat speed, measured intent, and giving hitters the freedom to compete and own their process. Gaining nearly 1 mph of average bat speed in a single season is impressive enough — but doing it with an aging roster, and seeing that number continue to rise deep into August and reach 72.2 mph in September? “That doesn’t happen without a real, deliberate change in process.”

With the Padres beginning their playoff run against the Cubs tonight, we wanted to highlight Yuki's performance throughout the year and some of his off-season training. It's been great working with him and also wouldn't be possible without the help of Ike, looking forward to watching Yuki in the playoffs!

Driveline's R&D team presented a new bat path model at Saberseminar. Trained on 35,000 swings from 700+ athletes in the Launchpad, validated against MLB data. It grades every swing on the offensive value it produces - contact quality, plane, and arsenal coverage. Then it generates every swing variation a hitter could take and finds the one that fits their body and training history best. Not a fantasy swing. A realistic target.

Everyone chases bat speed and a perfect attack angle, but that doesn't tell the whole story. Former Hitting Trainer and current Seattle Mariners Hitting Strategist, Justin Sartori breaks down why bat path—the combination of swing path tilt, attack angle, AND attack direction gives you a more well-rounded understanding of how a swing works.

Lars Nootbaar walked in swinging 66-69 mph. Too slow to profile as a big leaguer. Bat speed work took him to 74-77 within a couple years. That's 10 mph of exit velo, nearly 60 feet of carry, and a big league job. Mookie Betts only needed 1 more mph. Paired with a cleaner bat path, it still added 1.9 mph of exit velo and 2.4 wins above his projected WAR. Different starting points, same idea: build the engine, and the swing can finally use it.

Driveline Family, Almost 20 years ago, I set out to revolutionize baseball. I believed that the notion of “natural talent” was holding players back, and that with the right tools, data, and mindset, any player could achieve greatness. Today, Driveline has become the undisputed leader in player development. The industry looks to us for innovation and evolution; none can match what we’ve built in Sports Science. We have developed the overlooked player alongside the game’s already-elite - proving that greatness can be built, not simply born. We’ve helped develop All-Stars, Cy Young winners, and MVPs - but like you, we’re capable of so much more. So we’re pushing the boundaries even further with Training 2.0. This isn’t just about getting bigger, faster, or stronger. It’s about unlocking the hidden potential that lies dormant inside every player. It’s about identifying weaknesses before anyone else can see them, and attacking them with a ferocity that borders on obsession. It’s about harnessing the power of cutting-edge technology and world-class experts to create bespoke training programs that treat each player like the unique individual they are using the decade-long head start we have due to our early investment in Sports Science when everyone else thought it was a passing fad. They’re playing catch-up on our old system, and we’re about to leave them in the dust again. We have poured our passion, knowledge, and relentless drive for innovation into creating the most advanced training system the world has ever seen. Our new Driveline App takes this elite system and distills it down into something that you carry in your pocket; accessible to anyone, anywhere. Whether you’re a young dreamer, a rising star, or an established pro, Training 2.0 will take you further than you ever thought possible. If you’re ready to leave no doubt about your potential, then join the Driveline family. We ensure our athletes leave no doubt at the end of their career that they got the very best assistance from the very best team. Welcome to Training 2.0. Let’s show the world what greatness looks like. - Kyle Boddy
