The Toronto Blue Jays jump from worst to first wasn’t luck or coincidence — it was the product of a clear philosophy led by first-year hitting coach David Popkins. Popkins brought in a modern model for team offense: emphasizing bat speed, measured intent, and giving hitters the freedom to compete and own their process. Gaining nearly 1 mph of average bat speed in a single season is impressive enough — but doing it with an aging roster, and seeing that number continue to rise deep into August and reach 72.2 mph in September? “That doesn’t happen without a real, deliberate change in process.”

It grades every swing on the offensive value it produces - contact quality, plane, and arsenal coverage. Then it generates every swing variation a hitter could take and finds the one that fits their body and training history best. Not a fantasy swing. A realistic target.

Lars Nootbaar walked in swinging 66-69 mph. Too slow to profile as a big leaguer. Bat speed work took him to 74-77 within a couple years. That's 10 mph of exit velo, nearly 60 feet of carry, and a big league job. Mookie Betts only needed 1 more mph. Paired with a cleaner bat path, it still added 1.9 mph of exit velo and 2.4 wins above his projected WAR. Different starting points, same idea: build the engine, and the swing can finally use it.
