I am the only candidate from a migrant background in the EU elections for the Dublin constituency. Migrants account for 20% of Ireland's population and play a significant role in the country's economy. Having proudly called Ireland my home for the past 21 years and worked hard promoting peace and integration, I am compelled to enter these elections due to the alarming increase in racism and extremism. I have personally also been targeted by propaganda, misleading information, false accusations and attacks verbally and physically by such extremists. My goal in entering politics is to fight against discrimination, promote diversity, and create a society where everyone is respected regardless of their background. Many decent Irish people are deeply troubled by the current state of our nation and the growing influence of far-right ideologies. When I organised Eid at Croke Park during Covid lockdown, I ensured that it was more than just a Muslim event; it was a celebration of Irish culture and the diversity of our beautiful country ☘️🇮🇪. I united leaders from different faiths, including Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and others, along with members of the travelers community and other minority groups. The students from the Islamic Centre proudly sang the Irish anthem. This reflects my commitment to inclusivity and integration. It was my pleasure to join Independent candidate Orli Degani canvassing in Dún Laoghaire. Orli, like me, is part of the 20% of Dubliners who are immigrants working in IT, Education, Healthcare and the Food and Service Industry and contributing greatly to Ireland’s economic success. Orli is Jewish (I’m Muslim). We both come from an immigrant, minority backgrounds and have been welcomed in our home of choice - Dublin. Orli and I both share a strong belief in promoting peace and reconciliation, at home and globally. Like me, and like the majority of Irish people, Orli advocates for the Two-State Solution and calls for an immediate end to the war in Gaza. It was surprising therefore that Orli faced discrimination by the @SocDems when she was removed as their candidate simply because of her background. Orli’s misfortune can still be Dublin’s good fortune if you decide to elect her to the Council. Discrimination has no place in Irish society or politics. Once Catholics were the subject of discrimination. Today or tomorrow it may be another class of people. People like Orli and I have been warmly welcomed in Ireland. Some 1-in-5 Dubliners are immigrants who share this positive experience. Join us in saying no to discrimination, promoting diversity, working towards inclusion and making Dublin the best city it can be.
