Bewitched (1964-1972). When it became clear that Dick York could not continue with the series, William Asher considered canceling it, not only because of York's departure, but because he and Elizabeth Montgomery wanted to move on. When Dick York was replaced by Dick Sargent, the ratings dropped 13 places. However, the ratings were still high enough that the network wanted the show to go on. There was still one problem: how to explain why Darrin looked and sounded different. Many people working on the show came up with ideas, but Asher thought the viewers understood this was an actor playing a role, so he decided that the best explanation was no explanation. #oldhollywood #bewitched #elizabethmontgomery #dickyork

In 1942, Clark Gable's wife, Carole Lombard, passed away in an airplane crash. He was emotionally and physically devastated, and decided to join the Army Air Force. Although he was beyond the draft age at the time the U.S. entered World War II, he enlisted as a private in the Army Air Force on Aug. 12, 1942, at Los Angeles. He attended the Officers' Candidate School at Miami Beach, Florida, and graduated as a second lieutenant on Oct. 28. He then attended aerial gunnery school and in February 1943, on personal orders from Gen. Hap Arnold, went to England to make a motion picture about aerial gunners in action. He was assigned to the 351st Bomb Group at Polebrook, and although neither ordered nor expected to do so, flew operational missions over Europe in B-17s to obtain the combat film footage he believed was required for producing the movie, titled "Combat America." Gable returned to the U.S. in October 1943 and was relieved from active duty as a major on June 12, 1944, at his own request, since he was over-age for combat. Because his motion picture production schedule made it impossible for him to fulfill his AAF Reserve officer duties, he resigned his commission on Sept. 26, 1947. Two years after the death of his wife, Clark joined Irene Dunne to launch the USS Carole Lombard, in honor of Carole and her dedication to her country. After leaving the military, Gable jumped back into acting and retained his star status. #oldhollywood #clarkgable #carolelombard

Laurel began his film career in 1917 and made his final appearance in 1951. He appeared with his comic partner Oliver Hardy in the film short The Lucky Dog in 1921, although they did not become an official team until late 1927.[5] He then appeared exclusively with Hardy until retiring following his comedy partner's death in 1957. In 1960, Laurel was given an Academy Honorary Award for his pioneering work in comedy, and he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard. #oldhollywood #stanlaurel

“Lucy meets the Burtons”. (1970). My three favorite people in the same episode 😍😍 This show used the publicity that Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor achieved when Richard bought Elizabeth a very expensive diamond ring worth over a million dollars that the character Lucy then got stuck on her finger. #elizabethtaylor #richardburton #lucilleball
