What we heard in today’s conversation between Paul Kagame and Rwandan media personality Oswald Oswakim should alarm every Christian, every human-rights defender, and anyone who believes in freedom of worship. Kagame openly mocked believers, dismissed churches as “full of criminals,” and said he would not allow a single church to open. He went even further, telling Rwandans to “go farm and pray on your phones.” This is not a joke; it is an authoritarian leader attacking the core of people’s spiritual identity. Let’s not forget: 🔹Thousands of churches were shut down in Rwanda in recent years, many after being forced to spend huge amounts of money upgrading buildings just to meet new government demands. 🔹Even after complying, many churches remain closed, with no transparency, no due process, and no respect for believers’ rights. 🔹Now, Kagame claims African Christians have “lost their minds” to colonialism and hints that even more closures are coming. This is all about state hostility toward Christianity and an escalating effort to control and silence faith communities. Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right. No leader has the authority to insult believers, criminalize worship, or decide that Rwandans should “pray at home” or “pray on their phone.” The international community cannot keep turning a blind eye. The repression of churches in Rwanda is real, systematic, and dangerous; and Kagame’s own words make that undeniable. The world must stop rolling out the red carpet for a regime that humiliates millions of believers. Dear Karasira, With a completely shattered heart, I saw the announcement of your death from Rwanda Correctional Service; an institution of Government of Rwanda that was supposed to protect your rights and dignity, yet one that many reports and testimonies have repeatedly accused of abuse and mistreatment. Your story carried immense pain, yet it revealed truths that deserved to be heard. You spoke openly about the killing of members of your family by RPF soldiers in 1994; a story that many in Rwanda feel is not allowed to be told because it challenges the official narrative promoted by Paul Kagame’s government. For speaking out, you were imprisoned. For sharing your truth, you were silenced. You lost your freedom simply for expressing your pain and demanding recognition for your family’s suffering. Now, after years of persecution and imprisonment, the authorities announce your death just as you were supposed to regain your freedom. According to the Rwanda Correctional Service, you allegedly died after ingesting medication in prison. But given Rwanda’s long history of repression, lack of transparency, suspicious deaths in detention, and the mistreatment of critics and dissidents, many legitimate questions will remain unanswered unless there is an independent and transparent investigation. You fought courageously to speak about memory, injustice, and the right to mourn all victims without fear. Whether people agreed with you or not, your humanity and your right to speak should never have been criminalized. Rest in power, my brother. It is not the length of life that defines a person, but the courage they show and the impact they leave behind. Your voice touched many people and your story will not be forgotten. 🕊️💔 With love, DZ

💔At the UN Security Council, Dr. Mohamed Javid Abdelmoneim Dr Javid Abdelmoneim delivered a devastating reality check on eastern DRC and it cannot be separated from Rwanda’s role in this war. Despite peace agreements and diplomatic efforts, civilians are still being massacred, raped, displaced, and denied medical care. MSF International teams on the ground see what politics tries to hide. The facts are chilling: • Sexual violence on a mass scale: 155 survivors every day • Over 80% of gunshot victims are civilians • Hospitals collapsing, children dying of malnutrition, cholera and measles spreading • Humanitarian access blocked while funding is cut • Armed groups, such as Rwandan-backed M23, continue atrocities with near-total impunity Dr. Abdelmoneim's conclusion is damning: the UN does not lack information, it lacks action. Civilians are treated as expendable while political deals and economic interests; linked to the exploitation of Congolese resources and sustained by Rwanda’s interference; take priority over human life. This echoes years of warnings from doctors, researchers, and survivors: there will be no peace in the Great Lakes region without accountability, no stability while Rwanda’s role is normalized, and no dignity for civilians as long as impunity prevails. Civilians are under threat. And those enabling this war must be named. If the international community still believes in human dignity, it must act now: name the perpetrators, hold Rwanda and its proxies accountable, protect civilians, reopen humanitarian access, and end the impunity that has killed millions. #DRC #Rwanda #M23 #UNSecurityCouncil #EndImpunity #ProtectCivilians #JusticeForCongo #FreeCongo #RwandaIsKilling

No one is mobilized against #Rwanda; the international community is mobilizing against your brutal system of governance, Mr. Paul Kagame. Rwanda is not under attack. What is increasingly being questioned is a model built on repression, fear, and the systematic silencing of dissent. Political opponents, journalists, and independent voices remain imprisoned or forced into exile. Peaceful opposition figures are criminalized, not because they threaten national security, but because they challenge your monopoly on power. Inside Rwanda, thousands of families have seen their homes destroyed in the name of “development,” often without due process or fair compensation. Social inequality and food insecurity persist, while a small political and military elite accumulates vast wealth. This growing gap between official narratives and lived realities cannot be dismissed as “external hostility.” Beyond Rwanda’s borders, your government’s documented involvement in eastern #DRC has contributed to mass displacement, killings, sexual violence, and the systematic looting of natural resources. These are not allegations driven by prejudice against Rwanda, but findings supported by UN experts, human rights organizations, and investigative journalists. Invoking the principles of the RPF while disregarding the rule of law, human rights, and regional stability is a contradiction. Leadership is not measured by defiance in the face of criticism, but by accountability to one’s people and respect for international obligations.

The 2024 Liberal International Freedom Prize has been awarded to Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza Ingabire, a Rwandan opposition figure known for her relentless advocacy for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. This prestigious recognition underscores the urgent need to open political space and end oppressive governance in #Rwanda under the regime of Paul Kagame. The prize, presented annually by Liberal International, honors individuals who champion liberal values, freedom of conscience, and democratic principles. Philip Bennion Phil Bennion 🇬🇧🔶🇪🇺, Vice Chair of the Liberal International Human Rights Committee, emphasized that recipients of the award are those who have made significant contributions to advancing democracy and human rights in their countries, often at great personal cost. In Ingabire's case, her activism comes amidst a climate of fear and repression. Despite being jailed and accused of violating laws in Rwanda, critics argue that these laws are structured to stifle dissent and silence those who demand democratic reforms. “Our criteria focus on individuals who promote democracy, even in environments hostile to such values,” Bennion noted, pointing to Ingabire’s unwavering commitment to democratic ideals. Liberal International, a global organization with members from Africa, Asia, South America, and beyond, rejects accusations of foreign interference in awarding the prize. “We are a global organization advocating for universal values,” Bennion stated. He added that laws used to suppress democratic participation must be challenged to ensure justice and equity. Rwanda’s political climate under President Paul Kagame is criticized for its authoritarianism and suppression of opposition voices. Ingabire's courage in standing against this regime represents the struggle of countless others who yearn for freedom, justice, and human rights. Her recognition highlights the pressing need to foster dialogue, end political persecution, and create an environment where all Rwandans can participate freely in shaping their nation's future. Let this award inspire greater efforts toward ending dictatorship, protecting human rights, and ensuring the voices of the people are heard. Rwanda and the world deserve leaders who prioritize democracy, not repression. #Africa #DRC #Tanzania #Kenya #Burundi #Uganda ▶️ VOA Africa U.S. Embassy Kigali Ambassade de France au Rwanda 🇫🇷🇪🇺 UK in Rwanda 🇬🇧🇷🇼🇧🇮 German Embassy Kigali Canada in Rwanda and Burundi Sweden in Rwanda African Union UN Rwanda EU Delegation to Rwanda Netherlands Embassy in Kigali Department of State Marco Rubio Ambassador Mike Waltz Human Rights Watch Human Rights Foundation (HRF) BBC News Africa DW Deutsche Welle Idriss J.
