Why do the words independence, autonomy and sovereignty provoke so much fear in Canada? They all raise a fundamental question: who gets to decide? Change brings uncertainty. People worry about their livelihoods, their communities and their future. Those concerns deserve serious answers and open discussion. But we should also ask why keeping things as they are is so often presented as the safe option, even when citizens are struggling and losing confidence in the institutions meant to serve them. For those accustomed to making decisions on everyone else’s behalf, greater autonomy means giving up control. For citizens, it means accepting greater responsibility. Both can be uncomfortable. Whether we are talking about individuals, provinces or the country itself, the ability to question, choose and govern our own affairs deserves thoughtful consideration. We can disagree about the path forward. But if fear prevents us from even discussing the options, how free are we to choose? A confident country, its elected officials, its institutions and its people should be able to have that conversation.

I feel like this needs to be said because there is so much tension and division. It feels like every conversation is ready to become an argument. People are frustrated. Concerns are met with labels instead of answers, and people are pushed out. That will not rebuild trust. We must ask where public money goes, and expect officials to explain their decisions. Public service is a responsibility, not a favour. Science develops through questioning. Law develops through challenge. Democracy develops through disagreement. Instead of discouraging conversations or referendums, let’s encourage them. A strong democracy needs informed citizens who can disagree and still be heard. Progress actually comes from questioning the status quo.

Today is February 14, 2024, two years after the Federal Government invoked the Emergencies Act. We still don’t know what was illegal about the protest and the federal Court deemed the federal government’s actions illegal and unjustified. If there ever was a time for the Prime Minister to step down, now is that time. #illegalEA #StepDownTrudeau
