Police say it is one of most elaborate encampments they have ever seen, with a mini-power grid, including solar panels, and multiple home appliances. The encampment was discovered last week by the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Police Service joint response encampment team. It was almost completely camouflaged and included four multi-level structures surrounded by a fence made of trees and broken branches. The structures had been built without nails or other forms of support and were at risk of collapse. Inside, police and park rangers found fire-stoves with lit fires, a stone fireplace, stone/marble flooring, a working fridge and washing machine, and live electrical wires strung haphazardly. Power was supplied by four generators, with solar panels powering a chop shop for stolen bikes. 15 weapons, including three guns, and about $8000 worth of stolen goods were recovered. Police have so far returned 2 backpack blowers and 1 mountain bike to their rightful owners. 20 violation tickets were written, and 10 warrants executed. The encampment caused significant environmental damage to the trees and root systems, and the nearby creek was dammed in multiple places to provide running water to one of the structures. The encampment has since been dismantled. Those living in it were offered access to services and supports, which they refused.

EPS Cst. Shiva Shunmugam is warning Edmontonians to remain vigilant in the wake of a trend of thefts where groups of individuals approach people in parking lots, gas stations, or at the roadside and use various tactics to distract them in order to steal jewelry or scam their victims out of money.

“I’m a peacock, you gotta let me fly!” But flight from the police isn’t freedom, it’s a felony. On Sept 13 at 10:30 PM, a report came in of a swerving, speeding vehicle. The plate flagged as a criminal flight risk. Cue Air 1. A high-risk stop was attempted but the vehicle took off. Not smart. Air 1 assisted as the vehicle fled from police. A short time later, the occupants ditched the car and tried to run. All were arrested without incident. Charges: • Criminal Flight • Driving While Disqualified • Multiple Warrants All parties lodged in cells. “Aim for the bushes” might work in The Other Guys, but in real life, it ends in cuffs. Police recently responded to a complaint about a dog left in an unattended vehicle in the West Edmonton Mall parking lot. The temperature outside had reached 36 degrees. Animal Control Peace Officers were able to break the window to take the dog into their custody. The driver eventually returned to their vehicle after 45 minutes, where EPS officers arrested and charged them with Causing Unnecessary Suffering to an Animal. The Edmonton Police Service would like to remind the public that leaving children and pets in unattended vehicles is unsafe during extreme heat. On a warm day, even vehicles parked in the shade with the windows rolled down can reach a staggering 49 degrees in minutes. If you see a child or pet in distress, call 911 immediately.

AIR1—Edmonton’s eye in the sky—assisted officers as they attempted to stop a white Dodge Ram. The vehicle fled at high speed, blowing multiple red lights and driving dangerously north of the city. RCMP joined EPS in pursuit as the driver showed no regard for other drivers on the road. Realizing he couldn’t outrun AIR1, the driver abandoned the vehicle in the middle of the road and took off running with his passenger. Officers were close behind and quickly moved in to arrest both suspects. It was later determined that the Dodge Ram was stolen and seen in multiple break & enter complaints around the city. The 39-year-old driver and 36-year-old passenger face multiple charges.

The EPS Drug and Gang Enforcement Team (EDGE) with support from the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region dismantled the One Order Motorcycle Club, an outlaw group tied to the Hells Angels trying to establish in Edmonton. In a joint operation involving 200 officers from multiple agencies, 40 search warrants were executed across Alberta and British Columbia. Seized items include: • 19 firearms and prohibited weapons • Bulletproof vests • 50,000 contraband cigarettes • $118,000 in cash • A steroid manufacturing and pill-pressing operation with 82,000 pills Seven people have been charged, and 19 others arrested, including a full-patch Hells Angels member. “This is a significant blow to organized crime and a testament to EDGE’s persistence and the power of multi-agency collaboration,” says Staff Sergeant Marco Antonio, EPS Organized Crime Branch.

Eyes in the sky, teamwork on the ground! EPS officers in the west end spotted a motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed. When they tried to pull it over, the rider took off — reaching speeds of up to 170 km/h. AIR1 quickly responded, tracking the motorcycle from above as it recklessly weaved through traffic. When the rider thought he was safe, he parked the bike. But our patrol members were already there and took him into custody! The 19-year-old rider is now facing charges of Flight from a Peace Officer and Dangerous Operation. High-speed thrills put everyone at risk. Slow down and let’s keep Edmonton’s roads safe for all.

If you ain’t first… you’re under arrest. Northwest Division sprang into action faster than Ricky Bobby after a 33-year-old suspect shaked and baked his way out of a dealership with a stolen Land Rover. AIR1 had eyes on the high-speed wannabe as he blew through red lights like they were suggestions and tore through Sturgeon County like he was chasing the checkered flag. But here’s the thing: This ain’t Talladega Nights. It’s Edmonton. And real life includes spike belts. Multiple EPS units and the RCMP ended the joyride in handcuffs. AIR1 followed a stolen work truck as it drove at high speed through Millwoods Park between J. Percy Page High School and the Millwoods Recreation Centre, putting lives in danger. With assistance from patrol officers on the ground and a well-place spike belt, the vehicle was stopped and the driver taken into custody.

“These plaques represent the human remains of soldiers who died for our freedom.” Edmonton police need your help locating World War One memorial plaques stolen from Edmonton Cemetery. Known to collectors as death pennies or dead man pennies, the plaques have little monetary value but are of great historical significance. The plaques were given to the families of soldiers whose bodies could not be returned to Canada after the war. Police believe collectors may have purchased the plaques online, not knowing they were stolen. Police want to return the plaques to the soldiers’ families.
