Had a blast animating these shots!

In my experience, the eyes often carry more weight in facial animation than the mouth or cheeks. I try to give the eyes a little more attention so they feel right.

Some old embarrassing references I took myself :)

A study shot my student Sanaz reimagined from Claynosaurz. She’s only been doing CGI for three months, but her 2D background really shows in her animation.

Video reference is crucial for all animators, even professionals. There’s always something interesting to discover in the reference, and iterating on it is also quick.

During the first three sessions of my Advanced Body Mechanics class, I animated live in front of the students to teach them how to animate more efficiently, while also emphasizing the artistic aspects of animation and the analysis of video references.

We used tons of reference on Spice Frontier. Animators helped each other out—Don’t hesitate to ask a friend to act out your shot, sometimes they’re the perfect stand-in. Big thanks to Scott Wiser for the fantastic references! I didn’t use any references for this second shot.

I loved animating these shots, especially the last sliding one. It was all about getting that legs friction right.

A highlight of some of my favorite moments I worked on in the past couple of years.

Some beginners feel that using video reference is ‘cheating’ but it really isn’t. It’s simply a helpful tool for discovering interesting choices and nuances we might not come up with on our own.

Saw this performance back in 2020 and had to try a quick animation test. A few months ago, I revisited it using Ramon rigs, which was such a refreshing experience. I’ve always loved close-up shots :)

Sometimes, cheating is part of the magic in animation.

⚡️FREE TOOL⚡️ I decided to release a tool I developed last year for free called PICKIFY. PICKIFY is a free powerful selection set tool for animators, unlike any other. It lets you assign a hotkey to select sets instantly and easily hide or show parts of a geometry.
