Wonderful start to the day with the release of 25/ 32 Head Start Curlew recovery project #Curlews. It took them a few moments to realise the roof netting was gone before taking flight, circling the meadow & heading towards The Swale salting. #conservation KOS 1/2

Marsh Harriers have recovered from 1 breeding pair in 1971 to 400+ now, a rare good news story for UK raptors. A winter highlight is watching them coming into roost, latest count 144. When blustery they take longer to settle, a spectacular sight as on mass they take to the air.

First lapwing chicks, these tiny bundles of fluff briefly emerging from under mum to feed before she called them back to brood. While well able to feed themselves they’re too small to regulate their body temperature & require the protection of the parents to keep warm & dry.

The Short Eared Owls have been seen out more in the day as it gets colder & Field Voles, their main prey are harder to find. 2 ringed amongst the 8 owls seen are probably the birds that fledged at Elmley this summer.
