Who is Iryna Zarutska? The late 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who had fled the war in Ukraine with her family, hoping to build a safer life in the United States. Iryna tragically died at the scene after being stabbed multiple times aboard a Charlotte light rail train on August 22, 2025. Surveillance footage shows Brown attacking Zarutska, who lost consciousness and slumped over in her seat. Despite the presence of other passengers, no one intervened during the assault or after the incident. The suspect, DeCarlos Brown Jr., was arrested immediately and now faces both state and federal murder charges, with prosecutors seeking the maximum penalty, potentially including the death sentence.
