You've seen the dress, now learn the story behind it. Coco Jones tapped streetwear pioneer Karl Kani to design her custom Super Bowl 2026 outfit for her performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing. Inspired by Whitney Houston’s iconic 1991 Super Bowl look, the moment was reimagined as a cultural remix that honors the past while remaining fashion-forward. Kani transformed Houston’s tracksuit into high glamour: a mini bubble skirt with a sweeping train and cropped jacket. “I’m overwhelmed,” Kani tells ESSENCE exclusively. “They could have gone to any designer in the world—Gucci, Fendi, Prada. The burden moves from the offense to the offended, and we then have to prioritize everyone else’s comfort over our own hurt. Black people know that look they gave. The controlled pause, the tightened jaw, the professional decision to swallow your pride. Because within moments, the focus drifted away from the men who had to absorb the slur and toward protecting the person who said it. Explaining it. Contextualizing it. Cushioning it. But we will say it for them: HELL NO. The BAFTA’s and BBC failed Michael, Delory, The Tourettes/Disabled Community and The Viewers.
