Landon Donovan says America is missing soccer talent because kids can’t afford to play. “Only 2% of kids playing organized soccer in America came from households that made less than $50,000.” “If you don’t make $50,000, your kid cannot play organized soccer.” “Think about how many kids you’re missing out on in this country because they can’t afford to play the game.” “There is zero chance I could have played club soccer.” “My mom made $34,000 a year, single mom raising three kids.” “She couldn’t pay $4,000 for me to play club. Are you kidding? She couldn’t pay $400.” “That’s not a good system to create good players.”

Andre Iguodala says joining the Heat instantly showed him why Miami’s culture was different. “When you go to prison, you get handed your orange suit and flip flops.” “I got handed my jersey, practice jersey, practice shorts, socks, knee pads, and a mouthpiece.” “I was like, ‘I don’t wear knee braces or a mouthpiece.’” “He was like, ‘Yes, you do.’” “I’d been in the league for 15, 16 years. I’ve had success.” “But once I embraced it, I was like, ‘We do play harder than everybody in the league, and this does matter at the end of the year.’”

Alright, I’ma fix that.” “Hello, Mr. D-Wade. You’re in charge. You’re Batman. I’m Robin.” “I used to be Batman, so anything you want to know, I can teach you and tell you.” “When I got to Miami, I was like, ‘D-Wade, here you go, my guy. You’re the guy.’”

Kevin Garnett recounts the time Kobe Bryant snuck into the locker room to ask NBA vets for advice. “I come in and see this kid sitting in my seat. I’m thinking maybe it’s somebody’s son in the locker room. I said, ‘What’s up, young fella? Let me get right here.’ He was like, ‘What’s up, yo?’” “His eyes were so intense. He just wanted to know what the next level was like.” “We sat there and talked for like two hours while the bus was supposed to be leaving. Flip let us talk.” “I was telling him, ‘For me, it was like this. I had to do this, I had to do that.’ And he wasn’t even really talking back. He was just listening like, ‘Yeah, yeah… I’m coming. I’m telling you right now, I’m coming.’”

Dan Held says getting rich means nothing if you forget to live: “There’s this curve in life where the longer you don’t touch your assets, they compound exponentially.” “But your health exponentially decreases at the same time.” “Everyone teaches you how to invest... But if you become really good at it, it means you’ve withheld consumption for such a long time.” “You haven’t figured out how to spend it.” “Why the fuck would I want a billion dollars at 60?... The old 60 year olds would instantly trade that all to be your age.”

Andy asks @0xMert_ what he thinks about Arthur Hayes’ trading strategies. Mert: “Fundamentally, I don’t give a shit.” “If you get emotional because some random dude who has made his entire living swing trading has an opinion, then he owns you in some sense. He occupies way too much space in your mental framework.” There are thousands of languages Mert could have chosen to respond in, and I’m glad he chose the language of facts.

Arthur Hayes reveals how one dinner with Naval at Token 2049 had him buying millions of zcash:native: "He started talking to me about how the ring signatures of Monero are not as strong as you think. They'd be the events successfully deanonymized by Japanese law enforcement." "Right then, I bought a few million dollars worth of Z cash. And what I noticed was only two brokers would make me a price in Z cash, because, you know, we don't do privacy coins. If I can't get it, then I want more of it."
