Today, HR/VP Kaja Kallas met with the Lithuanian Prime Minister, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, in Vilnius ahead of Lithuania’s EU Council Presidency in 2027. Discussions focused on Russia’s increasing hybrid attacks as well as the security situation at Lithuania’s border with Belarus. They also discussed continued EU support to Ukraine, including air defence, and sanctions against Russia. Read the HR/VP’s full remarks here:

Held under the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026, the informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers (Gymnich) brought together counterparts from Ukraine, Canada, Iceland, Norway, the United Kingdom and Switzerland to discuss security challenges in Ukraine. Ministers also discussed the situation in the Middle East, including freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, support for the Gaza Peace Plan and the Two-State solution, and efforts to strengthen the Lebanese state. For ten years in a row, EU member states have increased defence spending. In 2025, that reached €381 billion, up 63% since 2020. Behind that number: 633,000 people working in a defence industry that generated €183 billion in turnover last year. And we are not stopping there. EU defence initiatives, including through SAFE and EDIP, will facilitate up to €800 billion in defence investments over the next four years, so Member States and industry can respond swiftly to growing threats. A safer Europe starts here.

It has been four years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In solidarity with the Ukrainian people, we are raising the Ukrainian flag alongside the flag of the European Union in front of the EEAS headquarters. This is the first time a flag is raised here. This gesture is more than symbolic. It reflects our conviction that Ukraine’s future lies within the EU. Four years on, Russia is paying a heavy price for a fatal miscalculation. Its military is bogged down; its economy is in rapid decline. With our support, Ukrainians are resisting and holding firm. The fastest path to end this war is more pressure on Russia and more support to Ukraine. None of us wish to mark this war anniversary ever again

Russia unlawfully deported and forcibly transferred more than 20,000 Ukrainian children, while depriving millions more of safe childhoods since the start of the invasion.
