Some of the rough 'paper animation' used in Episode 26 was actually key-animated by Hideaki Anno himself, together with animator Yoh Yoshinari. The unfinished-looking drawings weren’t simply leftover production material being inserted into the episode. They were part of the episode’s deliberately experimental visual language, with the series’ director personally contributing animation to it.

The End of Evangelion originally had a much longer live-action alternate reality. It followed live-action versions of Asuka, Misato and Rei, played by their actual voice actresses, living ordinary lives in a world with no NERV, no Evangelions and no Shinji. Parts were filmed, but Anno ultimately removed most of the sequence from the finished movie.
