On 16 February 2016, Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert (BOBI WINE) was interviewed by BBC World Service about the situation in #Uganda. “His Excellency, Mr. Bobi Wine, the Ghetto President”, sent a message to all Ugandans, leaders and voters emphasising his call for peace, tolerance and restraint from any acts of electoral violence. #Dembe #UgandaDecides2016 #PeacefulTransition The song “Dembe” (Ddembe) by Bobi Wine speaks to the importance of embracing peace and rejecting violence in Uganda. The comments made in response to Mrs. Barbara (Barbie) Kyagulanyi’s testimony have raised profound questions about accountability, respect for human dignity, and the conduct of state actors. When a decorated general responds to allegations of assault with “We do not beat up women. They are not worth our time”, the issue is no longer just denial; it is dehumanisation and trivialisation of gender-based violence. Such responses, along with allied defenses that shift blame to foreign “pseudo-experts” or meddlers, evade substantive engagement with the reported facts and further sideline the victim’s account. Mrs. Kyagulanyi (Barbie Kyagulanyi) has provided a detailed, coherent, and public account from her hospital bed of the events of 23 January 2026: “dozens of armed men in military uniforms forcibly entered her family home, held her at gunpoint, strangled her until she lost consciousness, subjected her to physical assault and ethnic/political slurs, destroyed property, seized personal devices and security equipment, and demanded information about her husband’s whereabouts.” Her testimony aligns with reports of hospitalisation for physical injuries and psychological trauma. In this context, the general’s public statement does not constitute a full defence. By framing women as “not worth our time” while confirming that forces were searching for the husband, it inadvertently acknowledges state actors’ presence at the home yet offers no explanation for the reported forced entry, violence, property damage, or injuries. Such rhetoric trivialises serious allegations, dehumanises victims (particularly women), and undermines the seriousness of the claims. It is incompatible with the standards expected of public officials and members of the security services. This matter is not about political rivalry, online exchanges, or Western commentary versus African sovereignty. It is about the fundamental rights and safety of citizens in their own homes regardless of political affiliation, whether ruling party, opposition, or unaffiliated. It is about the rule of law, the protection of families (including non-combatant spouses), and the obligation of state institutions to act within constitutional limits. #Uganda’s civic space must be a place of justice, accountability, and safety; not fear or deflection. And in that space, Mrs. Kyagulanyi’s voice and testimony matter. Her body is not collateral, and her silence is not consent. The people of Uganda deserve and should demand: ▪️An independent and transparent investigation into the raid on the Kyagulanyi residence on 23 January 2026 ▪️Public accountability for any violations of bodily autonomy, property rights, and due process ▪️Release of any seized personal devices and security equipment to enable victims to document events and seek redress ▪️Independent medical evaluation and disclosure of findings related to the reported injuries and trauma ▪️A firm commitment from security agencies to uphold the dignity and safety of all Ugandans, without exception ▪️Responsible public communication from officials that centres victims and evidence rather than minimising suffering or resorting to dismissive language Ugandans deserve a country where no family lives in fear of unlawful force, where women are not demeaned in public discourse by those in authority, and where accountability is not optional. The events of 23rd January demand truth, not bravado; justice, not deflection. In 2022, Bobi Wine spoke about the situation in #Uganda at the 14th Annual Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy: “It wasn’t just me challenging General Museveni. We had awoken an entire generation. For the first time, there were no tribal lines, no class lines or religious lines. We were speaking as ONE huge voice. Thousands of people showed up to rally around our slogan: ‘People Power Our Power’. It was the biggest public phenomenon I had ever seen. I had been a celebrity. I had done hit songs. I knew what it was like to be famous- to have people chanting your name but this was different. In this campaign, we spoke to the hearts of the people. Uganda will never be the same again. The day of the election, I cast my ballot in the morning and went home immediately. Hundreds of military personnel surrounded my house and our party head office. And then, all across the country, they shut down the internet. They shut down any radio stations which dared to report on the election. In this complete blackout, Museveni declared himself winner of the election. International authorities challenged the results – saying that there was clear evidence of voter intimidation, interference, and fraud. Museveni imposed himself on the nation, and I remained under house arrest for eleven days. It’s not an exaggeration to say that my life is at stake. I wasn’t even sure I would make it to this day. But I am here to tell you, with full clarity and conviction, that Museveni is NOT the leader you think he is. The international community already recognised that the January 2021 election was neither free nor fair. It is important that these words are followed by action. First, stop shaking Museveni’s blood-stained hands through funding and cooperation. Two, impose sanctions on him and the people he deploys to torture and murder our people.
